I'm in the process of moving from a home broadband connection to a mobile one so I need to know what allowance I require.
Hope it might be of use to others.
(For some reason the link is going to a generic Windows page - go to Search in top right, enter Networx and uncheck Windows. Hit Enter and you should go to a page where you can download the app.)
If you are finding your data usage too high you could consider:
* Installing a browser named Opera and enabling 'Turbo Mode' which compresses web pages by upto 50%: www.opera.com/browser/turbo/
* Turn off Windows Updates, these can on occasion be very large and it will be set to install by default.
* Turn off other software updates - look in your expanded taskbar near the clock and see what other apps are running - such as 'Asus Updater' and stop them from running on startup. If data is very tight consider doing the same for your anti-virus but update when you can.
* Use a web-based e-mail program such as Gmail or if you must use Outlook/Thunderbird set it to 'download headers' so that a message itself won't load without clicking on it and you can delete spam without downloading the whole message first.
* If you must visit Youtube try and visit the mobile site or choose the lowest quality of video before playing.
Really nice bit of software, it can even monitor across networks (i.e. log usage from other computers on a network).
However the later versions really mess up RDP.

My ISP (Plusnet) provides me that info on my account page - made me aware that as a ( 'normal' ) internet user I barely approach 1 Gb/month although my monthly rental allows up to 15 Gb !!

I think there may be a fault in its calculations.
Or am I reading it wrong.
Andy
Doing any network transfers?
As it counts those by default (can turn it off in settings - ignore traffic within LAN).

Thanks for that Addie – very useful.
I’d been looking at Opera mini on the laptop, but didn’t realize the Opera Turbo was customized for that.
Re Windows Update, I’ve that turned off cos I hate Microsoft telling me what to do and when! I update regularly, but when it suits me.
I can turn off stuff that puts an icon in the system tray, but what about those that don’t? Looking at the Task Manager > Processes tab, there’s a whole lot running that I don’t know anything about.
Can I assume that if it’s user name is Local Service, Network Service or System, then it’s probably necessary, but if it’s under my own user name I should investigate what the exe is doing and perhaps stop it, or prevent it from starting in the first place?
Web-based e-mail prog – I use MailWasher to look at the mail on the server (it downloads headers only) and it shows up what I’ve ‘taught’ it is spam so easily deleted. Maybe I could do that on the g-mail website too, I’ve just not given any time to find out.

Harry, that’s exactly why I was delighted to find this app, so I would know, when the time comes, how much data to buy – though my internet usage is quite scary (for me) over the last couple of days.
