I know this is a motorhome forum but I also know there are some pretty savvy business men (and women) and technical people on here.

I run my own IT consultancy and I mainly serve Print and Design businesses all over the UK. One of my clients has just lost its head office and support structure which is good news for me as the calls are coming in thick and fast. (well bad news if I want peace and quiet)

One thing a lot of them need is new email addresses, domain names and website hosting.

I have been talking to Fasthosts who for £20 a month I can buy a reseller package and flog these services to my clients for whatever I can get away with. I know they were paying their head office before it went into administration about £180 per year for this service. This seems a lot these days. There will be others out their touting for this work but I already have their ear.

Most of them are catch all pop3 accounts which feed into a Vpop mail server but some are individual pop accounts or imap accounts.

So what would you expect to pay on an annual basis as a business for a hosting package for email, webspace and domain hosting?

EDIT: I just read this back and just to clarify this isnt just for one customer but about 200 similar businesses that were all supported by the same head office.

Thanks
Barry

I would do it for £100 per business. But it does depend on what they actually want and what level of support they require. Sounds like a good deal for you if you can support it. Beware that the Fasthost price is first year only!

Do you actually need a reseller account? i.e. are they going to manage their own accounts etc.

It they are managing their own they I would definitely do it for £100 each.

In fact I may be interested if you fancy sub contracting this out.

Thanks for the reply and heads up on the Fasthosts price. I have emailed them to find out year two costs. I guess by then however I would know if its viable.

I am flying by the seat of my pants on this one as its all just happened this week. Nobody really knows whats going on or who is putting in offers to take on the support structure so for all I know something could be put in place by someone else but I think I need to move quickly and get something concrete out there on offer.

The advantage I have is I am trusted and known within the network.

I dont know how much support would be required. Presumably once it is set up thats it. I have found fasthosts fairly reliable but I certainly would like to avoid being in a situation where everyones email goes down and they cant get hold of me as Im sat in the Dordogne in the van!

What I do see is a chance of some residual income for very little effort. We already have this with many of them as my company installed most of the broadband, telephony and networking for which we get a commision each month. We never touched email or web hosting as it was always handled by their now defunct head office.

Thanks for the offer of help. PM me your details if you like and I will keep in touch on the thread and privately.

Barry

Hosting for SME's is a commodity and we charge £100/year for basic web / e-mail hosting. Any less and we'd have to invoice them extra for the administration that some expect as part of that fee such as the occasional setting up addresses etc.
I don't think we 'make' anything on it overall but its great for getting in front of old clients once a year.

I have a couple of clients who manage their e-mail through Google Apps. Works really well as once you've updated the MX records they have a nice simple Google login using their domain name, web mail using their custom domain (mail.domain.com) IMAP or whatever. Under 10 addresses is free, more then 10 is a nominal amount.

If any of them need new websites or online marketing give me a shout, we'd offer you a good refferal fee Smile

Ha Ha I knew this post would lure you from which ever bit of sunny Europe your currently hiding! Thanks Addie for your input.

£100 a year seems a good fee. I would have thought with this lot as long as there are no technical issues there would be very little input from me. Most of them are catch all accounts and additional email addresses are added at the server end and if they cant do that themselves its a £60 per hour remote fee for my services which I can do from anywhere. They seem happy with this arrangement.

So I reckon we would do quite well out of that but I would want to guarantee a pretty good number of clients if it were to be viable and at this stage I simply don't know. ten will just be not worth it but 50 to 100 and perhaps more would be.

There is a guy doing online marketing for them but I don't think he does websites. They were supposed to be able to do them themselves but they are graphic designers not website designers so will keep you in mind.

Again. Make sure I have your details via PM addie

I don't know why I haven't thought of this before posting on here but there is clearly a few of us in similar lines of work.

I do use the tech forums but frankly they are full of numpties who don't speak my language and seem to take great pleasure in providing clever but unhelpful answers.

I used to provide a similar service, but only for about 20 clients and used to charge £50per year and that included some support in creating mail boxes etc, as I felt it was good to keep in touch and establish a good relationship so when it was time to upgrade their web site or do any tweaks they would be unlikely to go anywhere else. Worked very well, got rid of the troublesome clients and ended up with a very good customer base, sold it all on when I retired early, which I regret now as it was a nice little earner.
Hope this helps.

Do you mean domain, email and webspace only? You can get that for £8-10 pa DIY. What else would you offer?

Yes thats about it and a very good point thanks. I do know of a couple of guys doing exactly the same as I am suggesting for much less than the £50 to £100 thats been banded about. However they are neither known or trusted to this customer base and only have two or three clients on board.

I think what makes me more appealing t to them doing it themselves on the cheap is I am already a trusted known source that is deemed reliable and when there is a problem they know I will sort it out. Perhaps this is worth a premium to them. With the DIY solution at a tenner there are two problems. Many of them are clueless with IT and wont be able to set it up and when it all goes wrong who do they contact? The downside for me and what I really need to think about over the weekend is do I want the hassle.

Having said that 100 accounts at £100 a year is £10K for the odd bit of admin and problem solving which may also bring in more revenue for remote support.

Don't know about business rates, but I pay £20 per year for each of my Domains including web hosting and up to 50 email addresses for each domain. That also includes all of the support that I need for no extra charge.
Don't see why any business should pay more unless it includes web authoring. Even basic authoring is no more difficult than using a word processor.
