I suppose someone in business and untutored in IT would have to make a value judgement as to how much time it would take them to DIY. It’s putting a value on that I suppose and the competition.

Gosh Barry, can't follow all your saying as it sounds like another language. But I get my site for $1.99 a month. Silly money really.
Somehow I never have the spare time to play with it further even if I knew what I was doing.
See below Ray.

one thing to be aware of is if they need dynamic or static type hosting and what type of websites i.e. a shopfront brochure type website (About Us / Contact Us / Index / Products) type site all done in html is easy to host but a fully dynamic database driven website isn't
You also have to ascertain how busy a site is as to whether a cheap shared server package would provide them with a viable solution i.e. if its a very busy database site (a la mhf) then shared wont work, they will need a dedicated server solution which would be far more expensive.
you also have to take into account migration i.e. would they be moving the files across and setting them up or would you, again a simply html site dead easy, a db driven site could take much longer

I think those of us who offer cloud/virtual-machine based services to blue chip enterprises would differ from you on that dedicated vs shared aspect . It's inevitable that you get what you pay for though.
And for what's being discussed, it's the value of the (human) service wrap rather than the underlying server that drives cost.

Thanks for all the replies. I mentioned this to the Fasthosts guy and quized him about dynamic hosting and websites with server side databases and he didnt know what I was talking about which was a bit of a concern. It is doubtful that they will run anything other than a brochure site but the more I think about this the more I wonder if its more hassle than its worth.
Will see what is said next week and take it from there.

At last someone who understands the industry. You do get what you pay for, it's all well and good paying peanuts for web hosting but when something falls over or you break something this is where you get what you pay for (the human service).
We manage this on behalf of our clients and we're on first name terms with the head of our technical support at our hosting company so can queue jump issues ahead of all the people paying £1/mth for personal websites.
