I came across this on an other forum I read and thought it was worth passing on
Insurance companies will look for any excuse not to pay out and with talk about fitting winter tyres it may be worth checking out how it effects your insurance, to get the real facts about Winter tyres and what your insurance company will or will not do see their association's web site (ABI)
They have summarized the situation for their memebers
What a load of twaddle. What next, do we have to inform our insurance company as and when we fit snow chains, remove them, change tyres to a different make, fill up with petrol, etc etc. For goodness sake, fitting winter tyres is supposed to add to safety. I think I will phone mine tomorrow morning and tell them what I am having for breakfast, where I plan to travel and what pressures are in my tyres. Wouldn't want them wriggling out of a claim now would I.
The point of the post and the link was to inform
There has been a lot of discussion on if you do or dont need to tell your insurance
You will see from the list very few require you to inform them and none of the ones listed make an additional charge
The point being if you fit them and you are with a company that requires you to tell them and you haven't and have an accident you could be stuffed
It seems UK Insurers may be using this as a get out (yet another).
You could challenge them in court if required. And could base your claim that mostly in the UK, we drive more months on unsuitable summer tyres than we do on winters. I would also guess that most mainstream Tyre manufacturers would be willing to help you, maybe even back you up in a case.
What will be next?
Hopefully being in charge of a motor vehicle while playing with a mobile phone behind dangerously tinted glass.
If you are worried, your insurers refuse to cover you or wish to add money to your premium. Shop elsewhere or buy All-Season tyres. One big Manufacturer has brought out an all-season tyre with winter markings.
