If you are sitting inside then you should get a good signal without a booster. Are there any other users around you? Have you asked the staff if the wifi connection is working?
hi tony . like you we do the same i haven't got a booster never found the need for them on wifi camp sites in Spain as well and mcdonalds UK or abroad pull in car park switch on 2 Min's a bang its there and especially in France no problems perhaps you should try without the booster . we all ways buy something when we are there in appreciation .jud
This to me is what makes MHF so worthwhile , when people have a problem then when they solve it they tell us all how. Well done the the original poster as there are plenty on here who once sorted for themselves dont bother to inform others. I have an Alfa unit and have not really had problems but if I do I know where to look now
This is the OP again! I think the 'channel plan' option selects different channels to search for. I think the default setting did not cover whatever channel McDonalds were using whereas the 'france' option did. The manual is not very clear on this at all. Anyway it works!
Just back from France where we routinely used MacD's wi-fi. Every MacD we saw had it and they all appeared, when scanned, as "MacDonalds".
At the start we'd go in & have tea/ coffee, but when one was particularly busy I scanned on my phone from inside the van. After that we mostly sat in the van. Quick scan on the phone was enough before switching on the pc.
I've never used an extender but, without knowing it or technically understanding it, strikes me there could be two possible issues, aka guesses:
A) you need to 'accept the terms', so the connecting device needs to use a browser to gain access. I know when I've tried to use an app on my phone (to get email) it wouldn't work until the browser confirmed the connection.
B) It may be that MacD's have screened out high power antennae or boooster, to stop folk using it at a distance.

I dont think McDonalds wifi is that clever to screen out antenna usage. Using the Faculty X Repeat IT antenna I can pick up McDonalds from a good distance. If its flat and not too many obstructions from over a mile but I find I dont usually have to bother as I usually find a connection on the Aire and if not just use the iPhone.

I've never used a wi-fi antenna. Is the coverage of free wi-fi sufficient on aires?
For UK I carry a 3G router, into which my data unlimited sim goes ( my phone will also tether). But the 3G option just isn't viable for europe, where data rates are £££ (or eee), for the amount I use.

The one I have is the original Repeat IT built by the swedish military I beleive. Sadly its no longer available but the one that is currently available has had good results for a lot of members. http://www.faculty-x.net/NET-WL-usb-cpe2512bgn
If you tune these things in properly you can often find free wifi without moving the van.
What I also have is a UK Vodafone contract and a smart phone. With Vodafone you can get for £10 a month their Data Traveller package which allows you 25MB a day anywhere in Europe or you can pay £2 a day. So no changing sims in each country and you get a lot of usage on a smart phone for 25MB. So if I cant get wifi I use the iPhone. Job done. In five months touring last summer I never had to move the van to go and find an internet signal.
No provider should now charge you more than £50 in any month for data roaming anymore due to new legislation. They have to cut you off or warn you first. The days of people getting £2000 bills have gone and rightly so.
