It may. If your built in charger is a small one and your battery is very discharged it may not, Alan.

i have hookup at home but when out and about and on a site with no hookup its nice to know your m/h will start . even when on hookup i don't bother switching the controller over any more to charge the vehicle battery. jud

The van is in my driveway. If I hook up to the household electric will it recharge the vehicle battery?

Thanks for the suggestion re the solar panel.
hi floydcroft. if you look at the photo you will see at the top left 1 button with a battery sign on that is for charging the vehicle bat when pressed but all m/h control panels are different the best way is hookup to the electric and put a meter on your leisure bats to see if yours are charging not all vehicles have that facility.jud

Success! The electric hook up charged the vehicle battery when I hit the 'battery' button on the panel.

Thank you all very much for the responses and .... phew! Very Happy

Hi and as you are mostly aware, a lot of us have suffered the dreaded 'flat battery', as I have done also.
When I looked at the battery there was a conglomerate of bits coming from it. It looked like a printed circuit on top of the battery and I just thought to myself....Tony...no way are you going to be 100% safe connecting unwieldy crocodile clips and ensuring that I don't touch one of the other bits, so I obtained an 'anderton' lead connection. I had this professionally installed at a convenient place under the bonnet and I always carry the jump leads (one end being the 'anderton' lead for the van and the other end, crocodile clips so that it can connect to any 12v car battery.
'Anderton' lead...there are a variety of names but basically it is the lead that connects a HGV tractor unit to the trailer to give it ability to raise and lower the tail lift etc. A safe connection(although someone will probably take me to to task for suggesting safe) that was a progression from crocodile clips on battery.
I am not suggesting that this is perfect but it has done the trick a couple of times and thus also eliminating (whoops....wait for it!!!) connecting the terminals incorrectly on the van....ok, they can on the car but I wouldn't.
Plus also gets around the situation that I may inadvertently touch some delicate part with massive crocodile clips. Just my input.

Where is the vehicle battery? If you can see it under the bonnet you can wire positive to positive and negative to the chassis. Simples.

Yep - it's under the bonnet, albeit the +ve terminal is a bit difficult to get at and there seems to be a lot going on around that terminal (leads & connections that you dont see on a car battery terminal).

I've tried what you suggest without success, hence I thought the ice on the -ve terminal may be an issue.

Maybe I'm not getting a good grip on the +ve terminal.

If the battery you are slaving off is not powerful enough ( you did say you are slaving off a car ) then tha car battery probaly has not got enough power to turn the engine over fast enough to start .

Tony A.

Hi Floyd,
Had a similar issue earlier in the year.
Couldnt understand why jump start from my car which is a Diesel and has a heavy duty nearly new battery wouldnt start the van.

Tried various points to connect the earth and still no joy.

Ended up charging van battery for a couple of hours and it worked ok.

Suspected battery was dodgy so bought a new one, never did find out why "jumping" did not work when previously it had.
