Homenaway and cilkad- can you tell me if dogs are permitted on the beaches, and how busy would the beaches be from around the 20th August? Also, is it doable to see most of Slovenia (I mean is it quite a compact country to drive through) in around 12 days? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Can't help with dogs as we don't have one and we didn't visit the beaches.

Slovenia has very short coastline which I guess would be busy in August.

We spent about 13 days there as it was rather wet but saw quite a few interesting places.

Back in 2006, we spent over a week at the campsite at Bled in our bongo Very Happy

We were planning on touring further afield, but found it so lovely, we based our selves there and toured around. It was end of June and the weather was reaaly hot, but we did experience a hailstorm that washed through the campsite, however inside twenty minutes it was over and you would never have thought that it had happened, unless you were in it Laughing

Having overstayed, we then had a hasty drive back up through Italy & Germany to get back to Dunkirk for the ferry Rolling Eyes

Can throughly recommend it, but give yourselves plenty of time to explore the Country.

Hi

We were in Slovenia in July 2009. The coast was very busy during that time, we only just found a pitch on the campsite in Piran.

Our blog at:
http://candakubicki.blogspot.com/search/label/Slovenia

gives more info on our trip in Slovenia and if you check out the campsites label, there is a list of the sites we stayed at there. We were there for four weeks and that felt quite relaxed in terms of time to explore the country.

The National Park is lovely and not to be missed, but there is lots more to this lovely country. The Savinja valley is beautiful and the cafe at the end of the Logar valley is fantastic. We also enjoyed our few days in Ptuj, near the Hungarian border. The campsite at Radovljica was a gem and we stayed there much longer than intended. It is busy, but the swimming pool is lovely and there are buses and trains to get around.

Happy to provide more info if you need it.

CandA

We have only 42 km of coast and I think all beaches allow dogs (I am just not sure about the main beach in Portoroz).
As the others have said, you can visit quite a lot of places in 12 days, it is a small country but there are a lot of beautiful places. Don't miss the Soca - a beautiful river and spectacular countryside.
August can be busy as the Italians are on holiday then and a lot of them come to Slovenia.
Welcome!
Regards,
Cilka

We went through there earlier this year and got pulled in for a check to see if we had a vignette for the motorways. We hadn't got one but luckily we didn't need one as we are over 3,500kg. Friend travelling with us unfortunately didn't have one either and as he was 3,500kg got fined 150 euros. Officials told him fine should have been 300 - 800 euros but as we were just passing through it was only 150.

Rather than the Postojna caves, which are a bit trippery and expensive, visit the Skocjan caves. These are a World Heritage site, utterly wonderful and not in the least over-developed. You do have to be fairly fit to visit as you must walk through them and you must have a good head for heights.

Even if, like me, you have no head for heights, you will still be glad you did not miss them !

The Cerkvenik bridge is one to go over with closed eyes. I've a postcard of it and still can't believe I crossed it !

We didn't overnight in their (huge ) car park but think we could have done if we'd asked.

If you are at Kobarid then a meal at the Hotel-Restaurant Hvala is worth it. They even attract people from Italy and specialise in fish.

Slovenia is a wonderfully friendly and beautiful country.

I know it is a long time since this post was last added on to but have only just joined the Fourm but thought this might be of interest to anyone thinking of visiting Slovenia.
We go to Slovenia each year but always stop in Southern Austria at a wonderful ACSI Camping Card campsite on the Ossiachersee at Alt Ossiach called Jodl Camping. From this campsite you can be in Bled in an hour and can do the Soco valley and a lot of Slovenia in a day. You can also visit Italy which is only just over half an hour away too. There are some accounts on Slovenia on my website www.joysofeuopeancaravanning.co.uk
If you stick to the main roads but not motorways you will not have to pay for a Vignette either.

Hi, Charlievan,

Were you travelling on the motorway? I'm planning to visit Slovenia this year. Am I right in thinking a vignette is only required on the motorway system?

Jed
