Very shortly my work provided PC will be going back as I am finally retiring on the 10th February 2012.

I am prepared to spend up to a maximum of £750 for a tower only,( but would prefer to spend less).

I did quite fancy an all in one PC, but that seems a waste as I already have a 22" monitor.

Any recommends, please Smile

Why limit yourself just because you have a monitor. You are retiring and will probably spend a lot more time on the pc so go with what you fancy. If the monitor is any good then sell it on ebay or give it to a worthy cause.

My old laptop died last year and I bought the larger version (24") of one of these. http://www.johnlewis.com/231297465/Product.aspx

Brilliant to have a large screen and no cable to the keyboard or mouse and takes up no room.

Enjoy your retirement.

Geoff,

I happen to have a computer expert here (son-in-law works for a Japanese computer company with a very good reputation) and he says;

"what are you planning to use it for? e.g. gaming or similar?"

that then will provide a guide as to what design and characteristics you are likely to be looking for.......

Do get back to me if you would like more info, I am sure I can get him to give some specific ideas once he can work out what it is for......

feel free to PM me if that would be preferred,

Dave

My thoughts are:

£750 is a healthy budget for a tower only, but what do you use it for? Games, Video editing?

If general internet use then it is unnecessary to spend this much. There are many 'base units' available from Dell & Ebuyer under £300.

If you already have a monitor then why not buy a laptop. You can have the best of both worlds with an external mouse / keyboard / screen when at a desk and the same items if you was to take your laptop away with you.

If you look at the Dell business class laptops these are all available with a docking station where the laptop simply sits into a dock and all of your cables etc are connected instantly and can be removed or docked hot (turned on) with no problems.

Bought a new system last year HP G5232, Windows 7 Home Premium, HP S2331a monitor (23") wired mouse & keyboard (much less agro than the wireless version). Coupled system with Vivanco Freya 2.1 speakers. Brilliant kit sourced from Comet who were the cheapest at the time.

Hi,

Why limit yourself to one screen?
Running with 2 screens is the one thing I missed when, like you, I had to source my own PC when leaving work.
It is very simple to configure windows to use 2 screens to show a different window/session on each and you can drag and drop between screens.
Great when you want to see a document on one and compose your reply on the other. Unless you're into space saving PC's are very cheap these days and if you stay away from the Apples and Sony's you can't really go wrong.

I think you need to think what you are going to us it for. Video and picture editing can be done on most of what would be considered basic models just a few years ago. For this kind of use then look for a PC with the 64 bit version of Windows 7 Home with a decent amount of RAM nowadays they seem to be shipping laptops with 6GB memory.
However in the post-retirement years I think the monitor is the most important part of the package! I try to look in PCWorld or the big electrical stores and try and run a demo video on each different system. So as you already have a 22" monitor it might just be worth checking it is as good as what is available on complete systems. PC specialists is a company that sells just base units worth a look. Currently in the sample videos on Windows based machines is one called "Nature" I think Its has shots of horses running and penguins etc and you can see the difference in quality between the various displays.
Second piece of advice if storing photos and precious videos is to get a system with a large Hard Drive but perhaps with a backup system. This can be configured as what they call a RAID setup where you have two (or more) hard drives but one is set up to make a permanent copy of the other. Perhaps better for a home user is just to have an external drive to do a similar job but this has the advantage of being removable and stored away from your PC in case of fire and theft.
On your budget and considering games play I'd be inclined towards a Games Console (XBox 360 with the fancy Kinect system is about £250) and a Windows PC for about £500 would get a ssytem that could access media files on your PC and play them via the XBox on your TV - so called media streaming.

MACs are the other option but they tend to be a bit pricier...

Alaways happy to help further via PM if you need any more detail.

Steve

Like Addie says, if you just want an all round good spec base unit, no need to spend anything like £750 - just go to ebuyer:

http://www.ebuyer.com/251310-zoostorm-desktop-7873-1036

http://www.ebuyer.com/283002-extra-value-desktop-pc-7873-1047

Admittedly, you need to install an operating system.

A couple of years ago I purchased a computer from ebuyer for £199 (4GB ram) and my son installed free linux software on it. Also purchased a duplicate second hard drive at the same time for £30, to automatically keep a second back-up copy of everything.

The system flies and has never missed a beat.

I'd second the pointer to ebuyer.

Also, if you can wait keep an eye out for (believe it or not) Lidl/Aldi...they do some good spec Medion ones every now and again, and my experience has been that they're pretty reliable too.
