Following on from Tissy's Televisions thread I have decided to update our TV Tech in our rear lounge at home where Mrs D tends to spend most of her leisure time of an evening.

Currently we have an aging analogue TV and analogue video VHS recorder in there. Now dont laugh but you can post a link to the Not the Nine O'clock News Gramophone sketch if you wish.

Happy with the telly but would like a recommendation for a Freeview recorder. Currently she cant watch or record anything but terestrial TV.

I saw this one Hitachi Recorder at Argos which is about what I would want to spend.

Will it do the job? What would you recommend? As far as I remember the TV has an ariel socket and a single scart socket.

Do I need anything else? I don't want to buy something to find out it wont work with our telly or someone has to come and install a huge antenna or something.

Thanks in anticipation. Its her Birthday on the 3 Jan so this will save me scratching me head as usual thinking what to buy her.

The reviews are good on that model, and it does have a scart connection, and I think that it comes with a Scart lead.

Has it got a "Series Link"? This allows you to select a programme and it will record the whole series whenever they are shown. Can recommend Humax very highly.

Yes according the description it does. Could be a useful feature for her as we are often away for long periods and dont have recording facilities in the van and no access to iplayer abroad so we do miss stuff.

I'd not trade up to one, but if buying new anyway, I'd take a look at freeview HD + you'd be a little more future proof until the decide to bring out Freeview HD 3D +.

If only you could get a PVR that you could record from Virgin on, as we have the extra box, but you can't record it except to VHS of course.

Unless someone knows better.

Are you saying this model might be obsolete in the near future?

We don't have cable / virgin etc and never will have I suspect in our area. Not interested in HD or 3g either. Just want a piece if kit that gets freeview and will record one channel while watching another. Pretty much what we could all do 30 years ago just without tapes.

The Hitachi is an Argos product sold under licence. It is identical to many PVRs currently on the market apart from a few cosmetic changes.
the benefit of the Hitachi branding is that Hitachi would carry out a full evaluation of the product before it is allowed to sold. The identical product in Argos and Tescos does not have such a stringent evaluation.

It cannot display the Freeview+ logo without series linking and accurate recording.
Agreed, the Humax is far and away the best PVR on the market (as long as it is not the T9150), but it comes at a price.

All Freeview HD recorders will record 3D where it is transmitted. I recorded the Strictly Finals last Saturday on Freeview, Virgin and freesat, all in 3D. Have now burnt the freesat recording onto a BluRay disc so have a 3D BluRay of the final as a Demo Disc.
The 3D is only a transport stream and provided your recorder is tuned to the right channel (in last Saturday's case BBC HD) it will be recorded as such. it is the TV that does the clever bit.
For information, BBC are showing a made for television 3D movie on 1st January starting at 18:25. It will be broadcast in 2D on BBC1 HD and 3D 1080p on BBC HD.
As for Virgin, if you upgrade your HD recorder to a Tivo, you can keep the HD recorder as the second box and hand back the non-recorder box. I have just done that.

Thanks

I think Argos might be a good place to get this set from as their returns policy is excellent if its rubbish.

Just one other question. Can you hookup a DVD drive to these devices to offload recordings onto a DVD disk or plug it into a PC and download recorded programs to a laptop?

Im thinking it might be useful for recording stuff to take away in the van to watch on the laptop.
