I think Argos might be a good place to get this set from as their returns policy is excellent if its rubbish.

Just one other question. Can you hookup a DVD drive to these devices to offload recordings onto a DVD disk or plug it into a PC and download recorded programs to a laptop?

Im thinking it might be useful for recording stuff to take away in the van to watch on the laptop.

Yes. I had a Panasonic DVD recorder/writer with hard disk and Freeview prior to getting the Humax which doesn't have the DVD write facility.

Barry,

You can archive to a DVD recorder, or to a PC if you have an Analogue to PC capture device. The recording will only be an analogue source, so may suffer some degradation, but that will hardly be noticeable.

We've had our Humax freesat PVR for over 2 years now and it's been absolutely trouble free - I strongly recommend. Giving up Sky was best ever move.

Just remember that the Argos returns policy does not apply to PVR's. You can only return it if it's faulty.

I have the Sega 500gb PVR in the van. Bought it from Asda for a really good price. Very pleased with it and it is very easy to use.

Thanks Stewart will bare that in mind.

I think it looks like the £99 hitachi Argos job or the £160 humax which seems to be favoured on here and online reviews

Bog standard Vestel unit made in Turkey. Poor screen quality with poor viewing angles.
Try getting hold of one, possibly only one per store. Nobody can keep selling at this price and stay in business.

I'd not trade up to one, but if buying new anyway, I'd take a look at freeview HD + you'd be a little more future proof until the decide to bring out Freeview HD 3D +.

If only you could get a PVR that you could record from Virgin on, as we have the extra box, but you can't record it except to VHS of course.

Unless someone knows better.

I don't know if you can still get them but the Virgin V+ Box with the XL package records. I decided to go to the absolute bare minimum TV package and kept the V+ box on a monthly rental basis working out that the equivalent features would need a PVR costing £300+ which would be outdated by the time I'd paid the "rent" on the V+.
Latest Virgin add says you can get Tivo in their latest deal. Think the small print says packages from £9.50 monthly perhaps. Always worth a call to Virgin saying "I'm thinking of leaving..."!

The Hitachi quoted above seems to tick most of the features I'd miss from the V+ box.

Following on from Tissy's Televisions thread I have decided to update our TV Tech in our rear lounge at home where Mrs D tends to spend most of her leisure time of an evening.

Currently we have an aging analogue TV and analogue video VHS recorder in there. Now dont laugh but you can post a link to the Not the Nine O'clock News Gramophone sketch if you wish.

Happy with the telly but would like a recommendation for a Freeview recorder. Currently she cant watch or record anything but terestrial TV.

I saw this one Hitachi Recorder at Argos which is about what I would want to spend.

Will it do the job? What would you recommend? As far as I remember the TV has an ariel socket and a single scart socket.

Do I need anything else? I don't want to buy something to find out it wont work with our telly or someone has to come and install a huge antenna or something.

Thanks in anticipation. Its her Birthday on the 3 Jan so this will save me scratching me head as usual thinking what to buy her.

That looks a pretty good deal with ability to record a series (important if you are going away because your electronic programme guides (EPG) usually only go for 7 or 8 days ahead.), two tuners let you record two channels or record and watch a recording, pause live TV is a good feature if someone phones in the middle of something...

I can add that HUMAX are good. Sometimes the EPGs aren't fantastically easy to negotiate and record from but it would be difficult to check this out before parting with the cash at Argos.

EDIT Argos link has a video showing you the EPG in action.
