To claim

Contact the unsurers of the Motorhome, informing them of the owners of the slate and their insurers. The MH insures will claim from the House insurers.

You will lose your no-claims on the MH insurance and also on the House insurance, unless you have protected status. You will also have to pay the excess for each claim. Excess will be deducted from the payout.

Bummer x 2

I had exactly the same scenario a few years ago, house insurance said claim on van insurance (actually same company for both).
As others have suggested to you I did not actually try to claim in the end.

The main impact had actually punctured the skin quite badly in one place and a few other dents, I made a permanent repair over the puncture with a 300mm square of 16swg aluminium held / sealed in place with Sikaflex. Very simple solution and permanent, not exactly unsightly but didn't really notice as couldn't be seen from ground level.

Thanks for all your help. Got the roof dried in a brief interlude from the downpours and put some parcel tape over the main dent/crack -I could just about reach on my tiptoes on the top of the ladder. Spoke to both buildings/contents and MH insurers. No claim on house insurance or cost recoverable from that. MH insurance were great (MHFacts Insurance) went throught everything step by step, no problems agreeing the claim, they contacted a specialist body repairs place as near us as possible and have arranged the assessors to visit asap and full repair to be arranged. It's hard to see without getting on the van roof (and I'm not) just how bad the crack is and if any water has been getting in. Hopefully it will repair ok, £200 excess to pay and the roof to get repaired. Quiet new year for us then. Thanks everyone.

I'm a fan of duct tape for such situations (and many others). But so much so, I've learned to be a fan of a bottle of isopropyl alcohol as well! Smile

Tiles blowing off roof and causing damage is public liability ie third parties. if someone other than the motorhome owner owned and insured the house then it is under the house insurance, NOT an Act of God and avoidable. If it is teh same owner then you are not "public2 and it has to be the vehicle insurance

The B & C insurer said that basically our house was liable for the mishap but a repair to the MH was not covered because it doesn't form part of the B & C items insured. They did say the MH insurers may wish to claim recoverable costs though. However the MH insurers said no as it would mean claiming against ourselves. Confusing, but I think I understood in the end. Neither insurer mentioned an 'act of god' (how can they when such a thing can't be evidenced??) and the MH insurer were really helpful.

We've gone through the claims process for two reasons
1) we are both technically/repair inept and I'd be worried it wasn't right and water was getting in, I need to
2) as we are still quite new to this we haven't yet built up much no claims

Thanks again.

Michelle

Michelle I would have done the same thing. Would have been worried I did not do a proper job myself. Wink

Btw, one of my neighbours was lucky and his phone discharged. And he remembered that his charger was left in the MH. When he entered he discovered that the lid of his largest roof hatch had blown off! It must have just happened as it's been raining for days. And my neighbour left the day after for a two week stay in Spain. If he had not left his charger the MH would have been soaked when he returned! Shocked

Further update - spoke to the garage, insurance assessor off till next wednesday when the garage officially opens for business again, but the chap obviously shared my concern about water getting in and offered to open up the garage/workshop today for us to bring the MH meaning it would be inside kept dry till the work is complete. Kind man. I feel better already knowing at least the MH is inside and drying off. Funny how we've been more concerned about the MH and not the roof of the house! Very Happy

To finish this story off - we now have 'buster' bus back in our driveway (the house roof is also fixed). The bodyshop repair place were excellent (R Hind Ltd of Carlisle). They consulted with the insurers regularly (MHFacts Insurance) about the best course of action, brought in a specialist, consulted with Elddis and made sure they were 100% agreed on the best course for repair for the longer term integrity of the MH. The MH now has a full repair to the hole in the external roof and a second skin applied to the whole flat section of the roof for additional protection, it was through the checking process 4 times before they said they were happy with the job. The insurers were really pleased as the garage ended up being able to do the job without replacing the whole roof (which seemed the first thought) and the £200 excess we were due to pay was waived. I'll be happier once we've had our first outing and stay dry but we're really pleased with everyone's part in this.
Thanks to those of you here for your help and to MHFacts Insurance.

Michelle Very Happy

At least one story with a happy ending, as well as acknowledgement of good service.
