The tank holds 100litres I believe? The dashboard gauge has 10 horizontal light bars in a vertical ladder and the light comes on when only the last one is lit. Can I assume they represent 10litres each and I have 10 left?
I wouldn't assume it, as these indicators aren't always linear and accurate.
Simplest way to check would be to wait until light comes on, then as soon as possible completely fill up tank. Tank capacity less fuel added will tell you how much was remaining in the tank.

I do not know the specific details for your vehicle but generally I have found that there is enough fuel for about 30 miles at normal speeds.
I must say I do begin to sweat when the light comes on and you know it is 45 miles to the next exit from the autoroute..........
But so far things have been OK.
The guage does not seem to be linear - or perhaps that's just my observation. It seems to stay on full for ages and then drops at an increasingly fast rate so that the last warning seems to come on after just a few seconds.....
I am sure that someone will post with specific advice - but this at least keeps it on view!
Ah Andrew it would be easier me thinks to find the Holy Grail. My answer was to run it until the light came on then fill to the brim then take away my fill from tank capacity (also a 100) left me 8 litres. But do I believe it
I'd risk running to dry on petrol with a can in the back but am concerned with diesel. Do they still need bleeding? Can any thing else can be buggered?

Thanks Roger I did that today. The light came on on the M25 and I put 98 litres in after driving about 15miles. Did I only have 2litres left or is the tank bigger than 100litres or is the warning light reading late?
My Merc 616 holds 100 litres. I have read somewhere that there are 10 litres left approx when light comes on which is about right when I have filled up just after the light coming on.
I squeezed 70 litres in my 70 litre tank after doing 45 miles on the 8 litre reserve. I had no idea at the time that my 2004 boxer was 8 litres so I guess I was lucky. It is good to know just HOW far you can get in desperation. A traffic jam would have been serious
