OK so my circumstances were exceptional but that is only in degree of the consequences. Many of us have to make a decision of filling up at a higher price on a motorway versus continuing to a known cheaper one further on on ones route. Facts make these decisions easier.

I didn't know that that posters had to justify their reasons before getting an answer to a simple question. This is like asking directions from A to B and being told not to bother but to go to C instead. Surprised Very Happy

I was trying to save a few pence taking a company car back. It ran out with 20 miles left showing on the trip computer.

I could not pull fully off the A13 and when I got a can of fuel I spent an unhappy few minutes watching traffic carefully and trying to pour the fuel in.
A big lorry saw me waved and started to pull out to give me room. A look of horror appeared on his face as he realised another large truck was being forced by him out of its lane. He had to pull back. I wrenched the can out and jumped around the side. He just cleared my wing mirror! I would have certainly been killed!

Do not run out of fuel. Your life and the others in the MH, when its hit from behind, are worth more than a few pounds! If you are forced to fill up at an expensive motorway station just put 10 litres in and look for your supermarket!

PS most modern diesels self bleed. And with older vehicles rubbish in the bottom of the tank can be a problem. When I was a young apprentice BR contaminated a whole load of locos when it decided to reuse the diesel drained off tanks at major service without filtering it first!

What's the point? The fuel has to be purchased, and you don't save any money by leaving it to the last minute!!

Am I the only person who arrives at Capellen services in Luxembourg with a drop in the tank to save a stack at the services then ? Although am not sure it is worth the stick I get from the missus !!!

No you are the only one. Wink

PS but in my case it's Shell in Steinfort.

(P.S. I think the nasties in the bottom of the tank is a myth. They don't suddenly appear when the fuel gets low, and the dip tube is at the bottom, so if there were any it would drag them up however much fuel was in there.)

Exactly the fuel pick-up is FIXED in the bottom of the tank and covered by a gauze strainer so for muck to suddenly get sucked up when fuel gets low it must be floating and very small.

Hi.
As its New year, lets call the Nasties,"Pleasants". We now have stack pipes fitted to the bottom, surrounded by gauze,ok?. Perhaps this is because ,years ago, after fitting of a new fuel tank, several months later a vehicle had fuel trouble, all the easy checks were made, last of which was the "Hedgehog",a length of wire with short bits of wire attached at various angles to capture "Pleasants" at large inside tanks. Hello,we have a Pleasant! the cry went up! after the h/hog had been pushed into the tank and wiggled about. This was in the form of a paper label/manufacture code slip, that had got in somewhere between ,the presses and the wharehouse,so when all the bits were removed, off the vehicle trundled.
So,its not a Myth,Urban or Metro, whatever, but fact,up on the moors in darkest Derbyshire, we do have some strange customs ,but inventing a "Hedgehog" to capture "Myths",is not one of them.
Gearjammer.
PS. There is one Myth that became reality, "Hen racing at Ible". There is Hen racing at Ible, after years of jokes, the village started up the races, and the Via Gellia is blocked with traffic from Cromford one way and Longcliffe cross roads the other. You have been warned!.
PPS. Near Matlock.

Laughing

i waited for the light on my 205 gld thinking it was doing well on fuel and in the centre of rome had to push it to an unmanned fuel station at 1am after a night out... the lights contacts can get muck on and not work Evil or Very Mad Laughing

yet years later i run my megane dl 100 45 miles after light is on no problems..

my fiat turbo... never let the light on as i discovered it runs out immediatly it flashes and worst of all needs 3 to 4 GALLONS to have the fuel pickup take up fuel due to some sort of swirl device in the tank.....Thats 3 to 4 trips to the petrol station with a gallon can Evil or Very Mad

best keep a little in reserve i think Laughing Laughing

We always have 5 litres in a stout can "just in case" otherwise I am likely to sweat as much as the fuel we are sipping!

Filled up tonight with 2 bars remaining and it took 80 litres to first click off of the pump.

It might have taken a few litres more, but £112 was enough for me. Rolling Eyes

Like Andrew I was caught in the Dordogne when the tankers went on strike. There was much panic buying at the time making things much worse as usual.
We queued for ages at one garage to find they only took French cards.

Yes Dave, I can't remember the last time I have seen the low fuel light on. Apart from last month when I bought a cheep jeep and the seller had run almost dry.

Ray.

Perhaps it's already been said but tank capacities are nominal add that to the inaccuracy of gauges and it's all rather approximate. Like Andy I try to refill when I get to around a quarter of a tank, Alan.
