Ours, although it has the holes drilled to take a third rail it is only rated to carry 50kg. We have 2 Dutch style electric assisted bikes and to come within the 50kg limit we have to take off the batteries and the saddles.
The next model up is supplied with 3 rails and rated at 65kg. and is of a much more robust construction.
Personally, if yours is the 50kg rated model, I'd lash out on the uprated one and then try and sell the original one on.
It's got to be cheaper than the damage that might be caused by overloading your existing rack.
my bessie came with a 4 rail track on i have removed one [which your welcome to] intending to close up the rack, thought i would be able to get away with fitting the 2 folding electric bikes under seat/bed storage didn't work out so going back to bike rack with beeny box to be fitted to hold seats and batteries,
if your not up in the midland's before i will be going down to chunnel mid feb if that's any good to you.
Our one has four rails on it and the most we have used is three, it is a bit if a hassle getting the three to go on together, one bike has folding pedals which helps and I normally stack one with the handlebars to the right, then the next with them to the left - that way it is possible to get them all on.
The only time I had three bikes on it I loosened and turned the handlebars of the outside bike so that it did not make the vehicle even longer - knowing that Brittany Ferries have been known to get a little uppety at Plymouth........ (We saw one outfit being measured with a tape - presumably it was longer than they had declared on the booking ).
But do check that your rack will stand the weight of the third bike AND the extra rail and fittings - you do NOT want to pull the rack out if the back of the vehicle......
The fitting is easy - we extended our rails and moved the racks to the best place when needed for the third. Don't forget you will need an extra clamp for the top rail to secure the bike - once again these may need jiggling around to get all of them in the right place easily.
I am not sure what model i have as the van is in storage but when i added a third rail i had a look at the Fiamma site first, it had all the details and bits and pieces to do it.
