Hello again,
For our planned jaunt round europe it looks like we will be using camping gaz. Can anyone tell me wether the couplings on an Hymer B694 will fit these bottles. These are the original regulators fitted in germany running at 50mbar!. I believe they won't, so is there any sort of adaptor i can use?
thanks

Hi Robbie,

I don't think too many people are going to be aware of what type of regulators your specific vehicle is fitted with, however I can say the CampinGaz regulators are specific to CampinGaz, so unless you have CampinGaz regulators its highly unlikely your regulators will fit.

Here are a few links to some CampinGaz regulators to get an idea of what their fittings are like;

With regards to pressure, you don’t say whether your regulator is for Butane or Propane which makes a big difference. Butane when burning gives a lot hotter flame and therefore doesn’t require as much pressure, hence the difference in pre-set pressures.

Obviously you are concerned about your 50mb pressure as you’ve raised this before. You have kindly specified your vehicle model, but not given any indications of they type of equipment your gas will be feeding. If you specify the make and model numbers of your equipment, perhaps it’s then possible to do a searcg on Google for the manufacturers web sites to see what they say about their equipment, failing that, contact them direct or a UK agent who should put your mind at rest.

Thank for yet another speedy reply. Camping gaz bottles will definately not fit. The coupling on my regulators are similar to those need for butane bottles but a little too big in diameter. I use an adaptor made of brass to connect to calor butane bottles. This seems to work fine. Had all appliances (two heaters, fridge, gas rings, boiler) and system checked by both Hymer and Truma and everything passed ok.

I was just hoping that a similar adaptor might be available somewhere.

Why is life never as easy as you'd like eh! Confused

cheers
Rob

Hi Robbie,

Just so I can clearly understand your explanation, just wish to check a few things.

You say 'Campingaz bottles won't fit'. Presumably your on about the regulator, rather than the bottle in to the bottle locker.

You say 'a little too big in diameter' again I assume your on about the bottle to regulator connection.

All combustible gas fittings will be made of brass or similar non 'sparking' material.

So from the above, if I'm correct you still require a regulator with the correct coupling to fit directly on to the Campingaz bottles. Before I suggest anything further, can you confirm my comments please.

Hi Steve,
Yes the bottle does fit into locker. It is the diameter of the coupling attached to the end of the regulator that is too large in diameter.
Would it help if I was to post a photo?

First of all, its dangerous to try fitting gas bottle regulator/couplings on to gas bottles they were not manufactured to fit, so there’s no point trying to modify couplings your self to fit in order to save a few bob.

Personally the route I would take is to get a special quick release hose coupling suitable for combustible gas fitted in your gas bottle storage locker to supply the low pressure side of your gas installation (probably a male fitting). Then get a puka CampinGaz regulator, presumably Hymer could supply you with one as they will already be aware of their gas pressure settings in your vehicle. Then from the regulator, have it fitted with a short length of hose and terminated with a quick release hose fitting (presumably female) to couple up to the fixed connection in the storage locker. Have a similar ‘flying’ hose fitted to your other regulators (propane, butane etc.). then you will be able to quickly and safely be able to change types of gas cylinders without hassle.

The quick release hose coupling suitable for combustible gas will not be cheap (probably), as they will have internally valved ends to automatically shut off when you ‘release’ the coupling, thus avoiding draining of gas from the van gas supply pipework and gas between the regulator and the hose coupling.

I probably haven’t said what you wanted to hear, but you can’t afford to mess about with combustible gases.

Any further questions, do get back to me.

Hi again,
Have just manged to find an adaptor! A kind gent in greece sent me a photo of his hymer set up, just like mine. He pointed me to Hambilton engineering in preston. They have them as stock items. Apparently they have links with Hymer UK. Not that Hymer themselves ever bothered to even reply to my mail. Seems they only want to help existing customers. Sorry, I digress.

The adaptor screws into gas bottle and is the coupled to my existing system. I beleive it is what Germans themselves use.

Should recieve it tomorrow.

Thank you for all your help, very much appreciated.

Always looking for an easier and cheaper way, been away and found the ideal part to solve the problems associated with gas pressures and different bottles.

Using a link from

which detailed an adaptor to screw on to the CampinGaz bottle, then you screw on your exsisting butane regulator, shown here

I have yet to find out the price, but will post that as and when.
