I am thinking of having a solar panel stuck on the roof this year, however after reading lots of posts on the subject, have we decided which type and/or make of regulator/controller is best for results.
I have 2x 110 ah leisure batteries. plus of course the van battery. On hookup it charges all 3.
will 80 watt be reasonable size.

80 watts is good if you don,t have a diesel heater.
The Votronic MPPT regulator will make best use of the panels output.

Ours came with an Alden 110w solar panel and a 110ah battery which all seemed to work well last season.
We've now added another 110ah battery giving us 2 x 110ah batteries plus the cab battery.
With this set-up we've spent 3 days and nights in one location during December with no hook-up, lights, TV and heating on until the early hours each night (like 2am watching UK TV), with no problems.

I have had a Steca fitted that has given me good service for 5 years, excellent quality and has a good name in the trade.

The 10A model would be adequate for an 80watt solar panel.

Hi Clive,

Can I ask what affect the Diesel Heater would have on the setup decision please?

Regards
Ian

Diesel heaters use a lot of power to operate so I think you will find if you use it overnight it will pull too much power out of your leisure batteries.

I am sure Clive will give you a much better explanation with figures as well

(What WOULD we do without Mr MGTB on this forum?? He is such a font of knowledge when it comes to eletric string and wriggly amps Laughing Laughing )

Hi all you good people.

I have been trying to decide were to buy 2 80w solar panels from.
It would appear you can pay anything up to 500 pounds per panel, the cheapest being off eBay at around 110.
I have read every post on this subject but i am still not sure which supplier to go for, i did favour the German guy on eBay but it appears he is out of stock.
Any suggestion gratefully received.

Regards. Nick { Doey }

Agree with the above. We have 130w panel, 2x96Ah leisure batteries, 1800 inverter and a STECA PR 2010. All have functionened well for nearly 4 years and we spend a lot of time on aires with no hook up & use inverter for mains TV. In addition we have a Van Bitz battery manager/master connecting all 3 batteries to maintain the vehicle battery charge when standing for some time.
