further into this topic, as i think I have persuaded the boss, if I put say 200w total panels up would it be best to have a 15amp regulator, rather than a 10amp.
i ask this as one of our members with same van has been really kind enough to clamber all over his van and take pics.this has helped convince she who must be obeyed, instantly
my view is put as many pannels up as you can, I have 240w pannel and theres very little charge this time of year about 1amp at best today..... I would just go for a 20amp regulater....
Yes, Diesel heaters take a fair bit of juce from the leisure battery each time they start up, and if yours are thermostatically controlled then its quite frequent. Also compressor fridges take a meaningfull current a lot of the time. LED lighting is the way to go although there is little to be gained by replacing flourescent lighting by LEDs.
Vans with compressor fridges and diesel heaters are "greedy" of 12 volt usage.
Vans with absorbtion fridges (gas) and gas heating are "economical" with 12 volt power.
Having said all of that a mates PVC with an 125 watt solar panel and some 270 AH of leisure batteries will last a 5 day weekend.
Even if you only fit an 80watt panel, I'd install a 20A regulator, they are only slightly more expensive than a 10A, and you won't need a new one if you add more panels later.

How do you measure the amps, dumb question maybe, I have a portable meter and think I can only measure volts with it.

If you have a Schaudt electroblok why not use the Shcaudt solar regulator. Easy to install and everything seems automatic and painless. You can order directly from them.

Thank you all for your replies, we have decided to settle for a 20 amp mppt regulator. hopefully 2x80 watt panels.not sure yet if we need a relay to send the charge to engine battery.
Not wanting to hijack this thread, but.........
I'm considering a 250 watt panel and I'm not too sure what size regulator to use with it.
Is it just a simple case of W/V = I, 250/12 = 20.8 or is there more to it?

judging by my replies I would think a 30 watt, this would enable you to increase should you need it.also better to have a big enough one rather than unable to cope one.
