so where do people pick up the +live for the camera...
In the interest of keeping things simple and having to run the trigger to pick up the reverse light feed i was wondering if any one had contemplated using the side light +live as i always drive with them on anyway and thats when i ll need it ...
I can never quite understand why anyone wants a rear view camera only to work when in reverse.
Compare with a normal car, you have two exterior rear view mirrors and one interior mirror. Would you want to cover the interior mirror except when in reverse? Of course not, it's very useful whilst driving - so why turn off the rear view camera when driving?
My advice would be to wire both live feed and trigger into an "ignition on" feed so the camera is active all the time the ignition is on. If you don't want the distraction of a monitor (travelling on unlit roads at night for instance) you simply turn the monitor off.

I have ours wired to a live from the ignition (picked up from the rear of the Cigar Lighter), but I too (like gaspode) don't see the point in using it only as a "Reversing Camera", so I have it linked to a small switch near my gear lever that when I press it instantly shows the image from the Rear Mounted Camera.
(We use our Garmin Sat Nav display as the monitor).
I took mine from the right side cab fuse box (Peugeot boxer 2004) in a similar fashion to making the 12 volt sockets permanently live from the left side use box except using a spare ignition switched way rather than a permanent way

I can quite understand why anyone wants a rear view camera to work when going forward ,unless you don't have a rear view mirror fitted, after all you should be watching the road not getting distracted what going on behind you, mine is wired up to come on when reverse is engaged monitor fixed behind the sun visor just pull it down to see pop it back up when not used .
The camera is inside the rear door glass no misting up problems .It works for me.

I'm assuming a minor typo there maybe????
Indeed, I'd find it unusual for anyone to fit a rear view camera if they DO have a rear view mirror (and the corresponding window in the rear of course).
Most coachbuilt 'vans have little or no internal rear vision so are blissfully unaware of what's directly behind them without a rear view camera. Anyone towing will also find a view of their trailer very reassuring.
It seems reasonable to assume that if you have a clear view to the rear via an internal mirror then a rear view camera might be a little OTT.

Just to add my opinion, Mike T says " you should be concentrating on the road ahead....couldn't agree more, But what about when youve done an overtaking manouvre, and you want to pull back in, and (as in my case) I have a van with a rear bathroom so no vision at the rear at all. If the overtaken vehicle doesn't flash me back in to the line of traffic, what then? I find it reassuring to know that I am clear to pull back in. So my vote goes to have your reversing camera on all the time, just as a double check, to what is going on all the time around your vehicle.
Mine has an isolation swith fitted on the fuse protected live side, and the first thing I do is switch it on, so I have a rear view all the time. Then when I park up switch it off ...simples !

Hi Spatz, mine was already fitted when I got the van. There is a switch on the monitor that allows you to either have it switched by the reverse gear shift or else when you you want it.
I find that there is a slight delay when coming on for it to adjust to the light levels and for me to see clearly. This is a nuisance when manouvering in a tight space and shifting between 1st and reverse. I therefore put in on continuously when I am in this situation.
