A little research shows that this may not be as outfield as it might at first look.

Irish Ferries are currently offering a "free return trip to Britain" when you buy a return trip to France from Rosslare.

Rosslare to either Roscoff or Cherbourg can be had for 240€ return which could be cheaper than the return drive to Dover from West Wales if the true mileage cost were sensibly worked out - not just the fuel bill .
