Hi again,
Well i must have read every thread on the topic bit still can't sort it out.
I am new to all this motorhoming lark and purchased in December a 2002 timberland freedom. So far have not used it in anger. Anyhow it has a butane gas bottle so I am a bit concerned that if we go for a trial run and the gas stops working I may not be popular. We intend to use the van all year and hopefully all over europe, so my thoughts have turned to the best thing to do re the gas.
Two options : 1 gaslow (or similar) 6kg refillable with change over valve so that I can use a normal bottle and put on adapters in Europe of course this will cost around £300 for the parts.
2)I could just add a propane regulator and a switch over valve. LOW COST SOLUTION.

BUT which do you all recommend as the best long term solution given the plan to travel europe? How easy is it to find LPG stations? Is there a benefit to having butane and propane ( ability to use camping gaz as a last resort). I know that gaslow system is not cost effective really but it does seem convenient.
Has anyone used gaslow and decided against? Or are you users all converts?
any help in deciding much appreciated

Al

Willy,

I have a twin setup(Remove and Replace) of Propane 11Kg bottles with a manual changeover switch.

I am currently looking to replace with an 11Kg gaslow, and a normal bottle, with a changeover switch.

This can be achieved for appox £200.

PS I was a sceptic, due to the long pay back period, however as time goes buy, convienience becomes a higher priority

I have a calor 13kg with a 6kg backup.I can last about 6 weeks with this configuration depending on the time of year and whether we use the heating.

As we only go abroad for a maximum of a month I can last without a refill providing both bottles are full when we travel. If I intended to go on the continent for longer periods then I would have no hesitation in having a gaslow system fitted purely because of the ease and convenience of refilling but at the moment it would not be cost effective.

There are plenty of lpg filling stations across Europe where you can refill the gaslow bottles,in your particular situation I would be inclined to go for a gaslow system.I have not heard of many people who have been dissatisfied with the system except for folks with the occasional leak.

Personally I like the convenience of just filling up the Gas from a pump rather than lugging bottles in and out of the Locker.
We bought a Gaslow kit (2 x 6kg plus changeover and filler) for the Swift. We moved it to the Rapido easily. The Hymer came with the kit fitted already. Only thing I'm not overjoyed about is the filler on the Hymer is in the locker door, whereas on the others I put it inside the locker.
For us its not about the cost, more the convenience.

I've got a post-graduate degree in worrying-about-nothing and I'm much more relaxed about gas use now we have Gaslow. I used to stint on usage when we were in Europe as I was worried we would run out ( we never did) and have to either freeze or not cook. We always had the option of buying camping gas bottles or going on hook up I have to say !

If you can afford the initial outlay and you intend to spend time in Europe then go for it !

We have Gaslow 2x11kg on this van, with an external filler

Find it convenient to fill, no worries about bottle changing,no lifting of heavy bottles and the gas is cheaper

Did not have a problem finding gas in France or Germany and we have a local supplier at home

Gets my vote

I had 2 x 13kgs bottles with automatic changeover fitted by Peter Hambilton and they are great.
Easy to fill up in UK and France or Germany with the correct adapter.
So convenient and easy to fill up. To be honest for our needs having 2 is probably too much but it does mean that I never have to worry about gas as with our setup it lasts for ages.
Our filler is on the M/H skirt near bottle locker.

Next time I would go for one large and one smaller gas bottle.

I was her tutor - so between us we ought to make sense! Laughing Laughing Laughing

Here's my opinion, as a previous sceptic very much like Steco.

Before we start though, it would be very wise to swap the butane bottle for propane, and (obviously) fit the propane pigtail. (See No. 2 below for an advantage you hadn't even thought of if you are new to this game! Wink )

1). If the cash is not a problem, go for a Gaslow and be done with it. An external filler has some advantages, but I wouldn't worry if it has to be inside the locker.

2). If you don't want to spend the cash there is a very cheap and simple alternative for travelling in France, and most other near-Europe countries.

Go the an Intermarche and buy one of their own brand propane bottles. As far as I know they are doing a permanent offer at 1 Euro (yes - one) plus the cost of the gas. No identification needed either.

Before you go, buy one of these for a tenner.

The adapter simple screws onto the Intermarche bottle, and your propane pigtail fits in just like it does on a Calor bottle.

Couldn't be simpler . . . . well, yes it could, by fitting a Gaslow bottle. Wink Laughing

BTW - We don't even carry a spare cylinder. The gauge on the Gaslow bottle is quite reliable, and many garages both here and abroad have LPG pumps.

I'd not got you down as a worrier Dave !

Before the OP goes off to buy a French bottle he must check- very carefully- that it will fit in his gas locker. We could not get a continental bottle in any of our 3 previous ( different-but-all-British) vans and we mark our passage through Europe now with " Oh look ! That's the place we measured for a new gas bottle...." They would all fit in the locker but none of the dozens we tried would go through the blessed locker door. Pre-Gaslow we seriously considered enlarging the hole and fitting a bigger door.

well thanks so far to you all, it seems as though the convenience of gaslow gets the vote, I have to buy new regulator and change over p[lus all the pipes so best price I have found is Hamiltion gas at £290 ( includes a couple of adaptrs).
Looks like I might go for it, now where is that hole saw!!!
