Its got to be the pottiest software ever or maybe its just me. Ive only worked in IT for 25 years and I still cant make it do what I want!
I have an iPhone which I inherited. I want to update it to the latest software but it says if I do it will delete all my media which I assume means music and apps. IVe backed up the Apps. Cant sync the Music.
I also want to be able to transfer music off my laptop onto the iPhone but it says if I sync it with the music thats on the computer in iTunes it will overwrite all the music on the iPhone. In two years of owning it I have never been able to add any new music. Luckily the person I got it off had good taste but I would like to add some new stuff. Most of the music stored on iTunes on the PC is off Mrs D's ipod and is rubbish.
I want to update the software so I can hopefully get the option to turn the iPhone into a wifi hotspot.
Attached are the two error messages. Seems Im screwed whatever I do.
Remember when you could just drag and drop stuff eh! Progress?

Barry..this is probably no good to you at all but, last Sunday, in the Times In Gear section, there were instructions for making your computer see your iPod as external memory, just as if you had plugged in a memory stick.
I've kept the paper ( on Kindle) and could copy it to you if it is of any use.
I'm with you on that one - I spent about 25 years in IT and I hate iTunes too.
However.....you can elect to sync manually so that it will leave what's already on there and will add selected playlists which you check beforehand. I can't remember exactly how you do it and have been putting off one that I have to do.
I haven't checked out the other links you've been given so may be duplicating, but have a look at this

Barry, Relax They are not error messages just alerts telling you that you could overwrite your media.
You need to 1. Backup your iPhone, 2, Use the computer that you initially used to put all your data onto the iPhone, i.e. music photos etc etc.
Update your iPhone then just let iTunes reload your stuff back onto your iPhone It may come up asking you if you want to use your last backup, answer yes and so on, all your music is already on the computer you initially used to load it onto your iPhone so no problem.
If you need assistance PM me and I will give you my Number and I will talk you through it.
