Hmmmm,

One bad review from a disgruntled chap done in March last year, perhaps a Garmin employee Laughing

When he said he didn't like the magnetic mount I started to get a bit suspicious as it is the best satnav mount I have seen and couldn't disagree more.

He has got a point about the tomtom website though,it is quite poor, although I have been able to update my device through the ''my tomtom''site. It was a bit of a struggle as it does hang quite a bit but I got there in the end.

I think you are better off looking at the 60 odd independent reviews on the Halfords website to get a more balanced view rather than a Victor Meldrew rant from someone who is obviously having a bad day Laughing

Hi

Which Tomtom?

I have had a number of TT’s back to a 300 and I have been happy with all of them.

The one thing I will say about a Tomtom and I suspect it applies to any such device whoever makes it is , It Is an aid not the be all and end all .

You need to consider what you want from the TT.

There are cheaper models which have only 2gb internal memory. The Europe versions of these models have about 42 countries which are contained in 4 or 5 mapzones with the Western Mapzone on the unit when purchased . This zone covers Portugal to the German Border so when you want to travel elsewhere you need to change the zone on the unit. If you have downloaded all the Mapzones to your computer you can do this whenever necessary by just connecting your TT to the computer.

The dearer models with 4gb of internal memory have the whole 42/45 country map on and have more POI’s as well as space for more maps such as Morocco. Mapzoning is not necessary.

The Live versions are 4gb memory units but they have the ability to connect with the internet. This is not for such things as Emails etc but to search for local things such as Museums etc and Weather. Many of these will be listed in POI’s but there may be other things locally you may wish to search for. If you find a place via google live you can ask the TT to work out a route there.

Some models will connect to your phone and serve as handsfree units.

We have just purchased a Via 120 Europe Live Circa £140 and it is very good. My criticisms are that the MyTomtom software is not as obvious as the old Home software. Also the ability to ask it to calculate a route specifying the max speed of the vehicle concerned is missing. We have found this an excellent feature of the older versions , I am not yet convinced the ECO routes option on the newer units is the same.

All the units they offer will get you from A to B without too much difficulty if the units are fairly up to date. You must however be prepared to decide to ignore the suggested route if you are concerned about the route it is suggesting. We sometimes will decide not to turn towards the centre of a town or village if there is a Toutes Direction alternative for example. You can tell the unit the route is blocked and it will calculate a route around the obstruction.

Some models have IQ routes which calculate the best route dependant upon the day of the week and time of day.

There are also Truck versions which enable you to detail the sizes of the vehicle. I have no experience of these units but suspect they are of more interest to those with an American size RV.

You can also use the TT to help you find the best way to walk to a destination. Back to the MH for example.

Another benefit of the TT is that the driver and passengers can concentrate on the road and surroundings. When a problem arises the domestic harmony is less challenged when something else can be blamed.

We would miss it if it was not available.

Doug

465T which I have in the motorhome and if you go back some posts there's a link to Zappy's blog on how to use it.

I just want something different to try for the works van but the Garmin is excellent in car mode, forget the truck setting it is over cautious by far Laughing

EDIT Zappy's blog was not posted in this thread sorry Crying or Very sad

BUT it's here http://zappysblog.com/garmin-tutorials/

Thank you Techno100

I would add that it is disappointing that features available such as Mapshare and backup which are available on the older designed units which use the Tomtom Home software are not currently available on the newer MYTomtom software using units.

It is amazing that a company such as Tomtom would start selling units which are improved in many areas but cannot do something that their earlier models can.

They have indicated their intent to add the features but it is taking longer than it should.

Adding POI's was easier on the older designs. Tomtom had additional POI's you could add but not on the newer units. You can currently only add 3rd Party POi's like your own if you have saved them to the computer but it is more time consuming with the new software.

Hopefully TT will improve the new software as they did with the old Home software which improved over time. It just needs to be done quicker.

Apologies if this has been covered before . . .

I've had problems with "My Tom Tom" when trying to upload the new items it claims are available.

Just discovered that My Tom Tom appears not to work on IE9.

I accessed it on Google Chrome and it worked perfectly.

Doh!!!! Rolling Eyes

We also updated to the Go 1005 and like you are well pleased but the updates can take a little too long to download but other than that a good device......I must be good looking as well Wink
