It is easy to remove the headlamp. Lift the bonnet and just by the headlamp there is a plastic filler plate (white) that is above the headlamp, that is held in by 2 large x point screws/bolts. Undo those and remove the plate, the end near the pillar is held in with a spring clip, just prize it up gently. There is also another plastic trim under the headlamp that is also held in with scres/bolts and spring clips. Remove that then you can see the 3 bolts holding the head lam pin place undo those, take the headlamp bulb and holder out and jiggle around until the fly drops out. Then just reverse the process.
This is very good advice.
I had to do this to remove about half a pint of water that was causing the headlight to mist up.
The whole procedure only takes about 5 minutes.
Now I would certainly use this method if I needed to change a duff bulb as it is far quicker than fannying around trying to find the spring clips that retain the bulbs.

Ok so an update on my situation (mine is the older Ducato upto 06).
With at bit of time on hand over the weekend I decided to tackle this job and report back on the suggestions here. So needless to say the first thing I did was pop the bonnet and within about 30seconds it was obvious that the next step would involve removing the light.
There are two screws (and a ball and socket joint) holding the lamp in place but to get at one of the screw you have to take off the grille. The grille itself is held in with four top screws and then 3 push clips at the bottom. Can be just gently coaxed out of these.
I disconnect the cables and removed the headlamp. That gave easy access to the back of the light and the plates covering the bulb compartments. Time spent so far less than 10 mins.
I took out the bulbs, being careful not to touch the glass with my hands, and I now had access to the interior of the light. I tried just turning the whole unit over in the hope that the files would just fall out. But no such luck.
So time to put the first idea to the test. The Sellotape on the end of a bit of wire. This did work but not as well as expected. It got the first fly but is was impossible not to also touch the front of the lens thus leaving a slight sticky residue on the inside of the glass. So I abandoned that after the first attempt. I had to come back later with a bit of paper towel on the end of my coat hanger wire to remove said sticky residue adding 10 or so minutes to the task.
Idea two: Vacuum. To be honest it seemed like too much work to rig this up. After all I already had wire coat hanger in hand and the files were too imbedded for the vacuum solution to work (IMO). So a little gentle work the the wire coat hanger and job done.
Job done in about 30 mins. Likelihood of completing this task without taking out the lamp: virtually nil.
I have to admit I was very unsure about removing the headlight from my X2/50, but it was so much easier than I had anticipated.
