Can i suggest you read up about aires and municipal camp sites along the main roads.
You will miss so much if you do use the motorway.

Agreed Hogan. Wink

This may be useful to Stitch, and others. It covers major roads as well as motorways . . . which (like yourself) we go to a lot of trouble to avoid. Rolling Eyes

Dave Very Happy

P.S. That's one thing that has (to some extent) spoiled the enjoyment of journeying through France . . . . it becomes more and more difficult to avoid the damn motorways!!

So many of the N roads have been upgraded either to motorways or m/way standard that it's all too easy to sail past interesting little places (and frites stalls Rolling Eyes ) without even noticing them.

Emissions? no.

I think the 'spirit' of this regulation is to take HGV's just transiting out of the towns and make them use the by-pass.
I don't think Monsieur la Gendarme will lift my bonnet to check the weight plate to see if I have an upgrade from 3.5t to 3.85t. or 4.0t.

If one uses the Aire or makes a purchase surely you can be considered to be of the same status as those in larger vehicles who visit the town for commercial reasons.

As far as the signs for weight restriction are concerned there are TWO types of sign, with very differnt meanings and scope.

1. A circular red bordered sign that has the picture of a lorry in it with a weight indication overlaid. This restriction applies to COMMERCIAL vehicles (i.e. lorries) ONLY (these are usually in place for environmental reasons, such as keeping lorries from using town centres to get to Industrial estates etc, very common in the UK)

2. Is again circular, but has NO picture inside it, just a weight indication and these restrictions applies to ALL vehicles regardless of what they are. (these are usually in place to prevent damage to weak bridges etc, not very common in the UK)

So in essence if it has the picture of a lorry on the sign it does NOT apply to motorhomes, if it has JUST a weight shown then it DOES.

EXACTLY the same rules apply in this country as well, so with a MH you can "ignore" the signs with a lorry in them.

Simples yes?? Shocked Shocked Shocked
