I'm in a real quandary as a new and green Motorhomer on what SatNav to get.

I have a Garmin Zumo 660 that I use on my motorbike and it's ok.
I have the TomTom app for my iPhone and with the Live services especially the traffic it's fantastic. Way better than the Garmin in my opinion.

So naturally at the moment I'd plump for a TomTom unit, but... it seems that you need a WebFleet subscription if you want the Live services. Is that right?

I then started to look at the Snoopers but they seem to have mixed reviews and I was concerned after the great experience with the TomTom and an acceptable experience with the Garmin that it wouldn't be as good.

So can anyone advise on the TomTom trucks as their suitability or any other suggestions I've missed that have the Live services.

I looked through all of this 6 months ago and in the end I stuck with my Mio and a good dose of common sense.

It hardly seemed worth the Ł300 + you have to pay as they still seem to get it wrong.

I know that you can blame on Teleatlas or whatever but at the end of the day it's a product and it should do what it says.

I think the technology will improve and I have heard that Google maps has something in the pipeline. I prefer to wait.

I can understand your problem when I looked around to replace our Garmin 7200 I had the same concerns but in the end went with Snooper. Annoyingly they dropped in price soon after.

You just have to ask yourself what you expect from a system. In our case I was concerned about bridge height and road weight limits and Lat/Long input format and that was what swung me over to Snooper. That said we bought a Garmin Nuvi 2240 for our son and it has loads of features that suit him as his camper is less than 2.8 mtrs heigh so he has less to worry about. If your camper is less than 3.0 mtrs then maybe the Snooper or the Tom Tom are OTT.

Reviews on Snooper - to be fair they were poor at first as they try to get everyone on a speed camera contract and so charge a small fortune for updates and that is a problem. From reliability they are good and I only update maps every 3 years or so. Product updates are free (but few and far between)

There are several companies now offering bridge height features

You don't say what motorhome you have! Unless it's a monster my personal view is that the height facility is unnecessary.
In reality the only problem I've ever encountered when following standard TomTom directions have been width and dependent on which country you are travelling in sometimes the quality of the track it tries to send you down, but as others have said so long as you don't go blindly on, normally any problem is evident early enough to change route.
I speak with experience of only TomTom and usage with a variety of motorhomes up to 8.4 metres in length and 3.5 metres in height (I often carry windurf equipment on the roof), so not exactly small units.

I can say that while our Dezl sometimes take us a bit of a long way round the lane assist is excellent. As you approach any complicated junction the screen splits in two with half showing the junction, including signs etc. in detail. Been through strange areas of a couple of cities in Spain using it recently and it's much better than our older Garmin 660.

Can't comment on the Snooper as I haven't seen one in operation, Alan.

Same quandary here.

Been a TT user for years, currently have a "Live" version and that service is excellent. The ability to search Google via the built in 3G is excellent; we use it on the boat as much as the car. Where's the nearest chemist/doctor/supermarket/train station, etc.

BUT TT are woeful for the map-updates. The new autoroute around Reims is a prime example, the new road didn't appear on my device till it had been in use for 12 months...

TT battery life is minimal too, I find. Waste of time for use on foot, unless you're speed walking.

Garmin I know use a different source for their map data, whether they're any better I dunno, yet.

I think I'll be getting a DEZL (m/h >7.5m oal, >3m high) because I can share data (if it's on an SD card) with the Garmin Edge 800 on the MTB)

Thanks, sorry forgot of course the motorhome we have.
It's a Bessacar E560 so it's about 7m long I think, and around 2.8, high, but I will be towing a trailer behind as well.
I know it's not strictly speaking necessary, it's a confidence thing with me I think. Although I do always use a SatNav being a IT techie by trade. Smile

And I've actually muddied the water as well by thinking of a TomTom 825 unit and then loading in the Lowbridge and narrow road POI's and setting the alert to say 1 mile.

I guess the problem is that I've been spoilt with the latest TomTom software with all the bells on... and now the Garmin Zumo 660 seems a bit clunky and basic compared to the TomTom.
The TomTom is light years ahead with it's IQ routes and HD Traffic. It's astoundingly good in my experience.

So really I want the TomTom software with all the Live add-on's with the Garmin life time maps update and the ability to avoid POI's!

So for those have had the Snooper and used a TomTom is the software to the same standard, it looks quite blocky and almost antiquated.

Got myself a SNOOPER sat nav last year as we were going full time after 2 weeks the speaker failed got a plug in speaker so i could still use it in december the unit failed completely I am in Morocco now the unit is back being repaired hopefully!! as they received it early December also the Snooper does not use the best route and will try to take you down stupid roads in europe when a much better road runs alongside and I am not talking about motorways and compared to garmin the mapping is chunky with poor route information often offering the wrong exit from roundabouts

I have the Dezl and find it does what I want. I use 3 profiles, car if I want to go a scenic route, 3499Kg motorhome most of the time and 4100Kg lorry when I am really avoiding trouble. Most of the time I find the 3499Kg motorhome with 'short route' planning does what I want. The congestion diversion works OK as well but dont ask it to do anything until it is critical, the jam generally goes before one gets there! It is very clear and the map autozoom is superb. I have also dowloaded all the POIs I want into it, a personal set, Archies, Motorhome facts, both Caravan clubs and ACSI. I also often download the log it has kept as a record of where we have been.

I have a go1005 live, which comes with the first year free with traffic, speed camera, etc updates. I have just renewed it as an individual for the next 12 months. So no fleet involvement. I use my own POI's with regards to narrow roads, low bridges etc. Love it. Also have subscribed to the 4 map updates for this year. Excellent sat nav.
