Hi all, we have recently moved into our van fulltime with plans to do at least a years touring. Currently sat in a v nice CL outside Dover with ferry booked for tomorrow morning.
This is the first time out with a new Sat Nav bought from a stand at the C& C show in October - "similar to a snooper but not a snooper". In fact when I got the nice looking box home, the unit is not branded, the instruction manual poorly translated from the chinese and not living up to the promise and my expectations.
The unit is the type that replaces the radio, with a pop up screen and whilst the navigation side works, it is not easy to use and despite assurances that radio will work with the sat nav, this is not proving to be the case. Other issues are that my lap top will not recognise the unit to allow updates etc.
EMails to the vendor refer me to a premium rate help line and so far no returned call to deal with my issues.I am wondering if anyone else bought the same unit at the show and is having similar issues or have I just been unlucky.
At least, with a year to travel, it won't really matter if you don't go the direct route. Relax and enjoy it all and keep us all up to date with your travels.
I hope you won't need help via MHF on the way but you are assured it will be there if you do.
Welcome to the forum Lancsman! Sorry to hear of the problems with your Sat Nav. Can't help you there, but wish you well on your trip. Where are you planning to go?
Thanks so far with responses, you're right, in the scheme of things sat nav not all that important. Where we going?? - Spain for a bit of late winter sun - how and which way - don't know yet!! Taking the books on the ferry, might try to get 50-60 miles or so tomorrow. Then it really depends on the weather as we track south.
I dont know. I wouldnt want to be without our sat nav. It has all the Aires, Supermarkets, wild camping spots etc etc on it as POI. Does your sat nav allow you to put in Lat and Long co-ordinates as your going to need them for Aires etc. Post codes are no good abroad.
Hope you sort it but if it were me I think I would be thinking hard about nipping into town before I left and buying a TomTom.
Hope you have a great time though.

What a bummer that the sat nav is not working. Does you phone have an android operating system? If so, use google maps and the android satnav. Download icampsites for £2.50 which has all the aires and all other sites in Europe.

Hope this helps.
Have a wonderful time.

Unless you are super rich, do not be tempted to use Google Maps whilst abroad. Google Maps requires a 3G connection to work, most UK mobile service providers charge £1500 to £3000 per gigabyte of 3G access.

I use the satnav android whilst abroad. Maps has the icampsite file loaded. Without connecting to the internet I locate the site required as a destination and the satnav gives the directions. No charges incurred. Simple but effective. You are right in mentioning about not having the roaming for the internet activated. Yes it would be expensive.
Hi and welcome to the forum.
Sounds like you have invested in a con there my freind.
Take advice and go by a Tom Tom before you set sail, or even abroad.
Meanwhile look on the bright side.
Meanwile on your travels South pay a visit here, excellent place and very cheap
