Reason for this question is that my motorhome an Autotrail Cheyenne does not have one and a couple of things I believe it is good idea if it was fitted, except the cost that is. Cleaning the roof and when putting a storage cover over the motorhome. Does anyone have any comments to make on this, like use a ladder, I had thought of this already but that means getting the ladder to both sides and this then means parking the camper further over and reducicing the drive width even more.
I have a ladder but if I did not then I think I would go for one you can put in the garage if you have one. A small slide type would be ideal with some protection to stop it marking the van.
I would go that way as I am always thinking somebody can just climb up and get in though the roof or nick the sat dish/solar panels.
Just my thoughts.
Bloody raining again, this the third day since we have been it Spain since November.

If you use a ladder (with protection to avoid damage to the MH) then you only nee to be able to access one side - in the same way that you could use a rear ladder to get on the roof, you could get on the roof using another ladder as long as you are careful about getting on and off to avoid the ladder slipping.
But you certainly do not need to access BOTH sides - you woudn't with a fitted rear ladder would you?
One of these is easily stowed away in the garage (not the MH one unless you feel you want it with you!!!), the telescopic laders are safe, strong, easy to use and very light to carry.

If your putting a storage cover on then you need to get the cover over both sides, you can do this by gaining access to the rear then easily dropping the cover over both sides, from the top.
Our last Motorhome had a ladder and the latest one has not. I found that it was not the easiest thing to climb up as it is vertical and in the end took it off and kept it in the attic.
It made cleaning the rear of the van more difficult and was just something else to wash which was a bit fiddly. They do tend to get muddy from road spray and then get green mould during the winter.
More trouble than they are worth in my opinion unless you want to have a roof box in which case they are essential if you want to get access to it while away.

Our previous motorhome had a ladder attached to the back, but we didn't use it. I'm perfectly happy on ladders, but never found the need to go up the one on the van - ever.
And, as Dave has mentioned, it makes cleaning the rear of the motorhome more fiddly and the ladder used to get very dirty from road muck and spray - just a pain really.
Many thanks for replies, I had not thought about the cleaning aspect or even the security one. Think its down to the DIY shop and get a suitable ladder and save some money
We have a ladder, but it came with the motorhome - not sure I'd have paid extra for one. Having said that, it does make it much easier to nip up and clean the roof without having to faff about with step ladders, and also to check that everything's OK up there while out travelling.
Best of all, it makes the 'van a great observation tower at air shows and the like!
On balance then, glad it's there. Wouldn't be the end of the world if it wasn't. All down to cost, then.
