Yes I was wondering why in Oz the hab door has to be on the left, must be some logic there perhaps.... worth hearing about it though.... just consider the cost of the shipping back to Oz....
The logic behind the left hand habitation door required by Australian vehicle regulations for motorhomes is on the event of gas leakage or fire etc, the vehicle can be abandoned and passengers can exit , without being cleaned up by following vehicles passing on the right.

Thanks. Understand that for an 'A' Class with no cab doors, but what about a 'C' Class, with access from habitation area to the cab area where there are doors left and right?
Could you block off the habitation door for a 'C' Class for the purposes of certification?
How would the Australian thinking work in Europe with the requirement to certify, under EU certification, for LH and RH driving?
Maybe Aus is a continent geographically but sounds more like an 'island' bureaucratically. But as I posted above, Poland is trying to be an island on some points.
For certification purposes in Australia , a motorhome covers all, from campervans thru to RVs, and converted buses/coaches. A class, or C class do not have different road rule standards, they are all classed as motorhomes. In Australia ,I suppose they are thinking of children and other extra passengers that may not have access directly to the cab. Unfortunately, yes there far too much red tape ,and the time has come for a 'world' type approval, not just for certain areas. The UK/US can get rid of 'miles' and join the rest of the world with kilometers. Australia has its own motor industry so they have their own standards. Hopefully this will change soon.

If we ever get an 'international standard' on many things it might have to include which side of the road traffic drives on.
Sweden changed overnight, about 30(?) years ago.
I understand Ireland will be changing in 2015, but they will phase it in - Trucks will change on 1st Feb and cars on 1st April.
[No! No! Seamus don't do it to me!]
Ref change of measurement, I hope Queensland And Northern Territories Air Service do not abandon feet for metres, since feet are used by ICAO as the international standard for vertical measurement and ATC separation of aircraft.
Deviation from that international standard could ruin QANTAS's excellent safety record!
as a retired air traffic controller I see clearly what you mean
I recommend the website of Eurocontrol , when thinking of safety in
air traffic . http://www.eurocontrol.int/
Isn`t it Russia where they still use Meters instead of Feet ?

I have a British Van. RHD, Swift Kontiki 640 with hab door on left (I had to think about that) and big rear lounge, over cab bed, front dinette. I am told its not "officially" winterised but has a double floor at the back, internal tanks (apart from waste), grade 3 insulation and so far we have wild camped down to -18 and everything worked.
It also has enough payload to take a scooter on the back.
ours is knocking on a bit at 15 years old but you would pick one up between 10 and 15 years old for under £20K I reckon and probably get your money back at the end. You could get a 2009 one for about £35K? Not sure how much you might loose though.
Wild or free camping is possible here if you know where to go and there is a wild camping uk forum which you no doubt have discovered dedicated to this past time. Without Doubt though the best thing to do for the UK is join the Caravan Club and use the CL network (Already mentioned) there are 2500 of them in the UK ranging in price from about £3 a night for basics. Water and waste through to ones with electricity and showers at up to £15.
When you get out of the UK into mainland Europe this site is the bible for free or cheap motorhome only parking www.campingcar-infos.com although as already mentioned free camping is a lot more relaxed outside of the UK.
Have you any idea of places you want to see yet?

We've just sold our much loved motorhome to a young family who are hoping to travel for the next six months both here in the UK and in Eire and Europe.
Trying to be helpful, I said I'd assist them in obtaining insurance....what a flippin' nightmare, although, in fairness, I could well recommend the experience to any budding comedians out there looking for new material!
After being told by several companies that I was wasting my time, each seeming to refer me to one particular company which appeared to have the monopoly and, as a result seemed to charge whatever it liked, I decided I had time waste on behalf of this lovely family, here to spend their hard earned dollars in our country to boost our needy economy; I soldiered on regardless.
After several blood pressure raising hours, I eventually found a very pleasant young man able to offer a deal £300 cheaper than 'the one and only' company.
This was not before, during my search, I was asked, amongst other things, if I wanted Building or Contents insurance or both and was asked by one young lady, when told that we share a sovereign with Australia, if indeed the Queen spent half of her year in Australia as a result! and, unbelievably, 'what's a Commonwealth?' (Picture my added distress, if you will......., I was once a teacher!)
When told by another company that one of the reasons insurance couldn't be offered was that there was a stronger possibility of fraudulent claims since Australians weren't British citizens, I tried to crack a joke, saying that we no longer populated the Australian continent with criminals as we had done in the past. This was met with the retort, 'Oh God is that true then, Australians are all criminals? I didn't know that! Oh, now you can see why we don't insure them then'!!!!!!
I kid you not and, I could go on!!!
So to all our antipodean friends out there, I hope all our essential services aren't so unfriendly to you and so ready to rip you off. I hope you are able to make some good happy memories whilst you're here in spite of it all.
As a newbie on here, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say who the welcoming company was but if I am let me know by posting a reply and I'll certainly say who it was.
