I too, found that statement a little dubious. In fact, in this case, the bikes are actually balanced on the horizontal tube, the grub screw just keeps them there, so there is little strain on the seat post or tube.

The bikes can actually hang from the carrier which makes them even more stable but the rack has to be extended higher to give enough road clearance.
