Hi all just been to Brownhills today to check out the different layouts and size.

Found one we like and after talking to salesman and explaining the additions that I would require i.e. Auto clutch and left foot accelerator he advised that we might be eligible for VAT exempt on the vehicle.

So question is has any one on here been able to get this? If so how?

I have checked customs & excise site but as with any gov site you need a degree to decipher it. There is a phone number and I will check it out on Monday just thought I would ask on here.

Much obliged

Pete

Hi

As far as I am aware, the legal owner must be a registered wheel chair user.

I also think that the vehicle has to have certain "adaptions" in respect of wheel chair use.

If you phone Lowdhams at Huddersfield they are clued up on the subject - but don't ask how I know!

A friend of mine bought a motorhome for her mother to be taken on holdays and the mother was disabled. As far as I am aware she didnt pay vat on the motorhome nor was it altered in any way. This was on a new motorhome though not used.

hi pete

i looked into this but couldn't get the VAT back.

you had to do all the paperwork BEFORE you bought.

the disabled person didn't have to be the owner of the vehicle.

if things are still the same the important thing is not to sign up to buy until you have the paperwork giving VAT exemption.

Hi Yes you can get the VAT off of a new motorhome. I was told this by a friend after she bought her new motorhome. Wondering if this was correct or just a bit of one up patter I asked at my local dealership. The very helpful gentleman there told me there was a form to fill in with the persons details. This was then posted off naming the dealership from which you intend buying your van. A reply is then sent to the dealer be it yes or no. Modifications could just be a handrail on outside of van to help get in. He explained that these fold across the van door when not in use then lock so adding extra security when the van is unocupied. I was also told that some bigger sale sites make it easier to do this as it increases sales.
The thinking being that any checks can get lost in there paperwork. Smaller companies or at least our local one wont do this. If a larger one gets caught they have the finances to offset any VAT they may have to repay. If you are in receipt of DLA motorbility you should have no problem.
I was given the address to wright to for an application form, however not sure where it is. When I find it will let you know.
I hope this is of some help. Pauline

Hi

Thanks for that Dave I have seen it, this is what I meant when I inferred you need a degree to decipher it.

Mike, yes I am aware that it only applies to a new vehicle and that everything must be in place before ordering.

Rapide, I may try Lowdhams for thier input, the bit I find confusing is the wheelchair aspect. I do have to use a wheelchair if the distance to be negotiated is more than a 100 yds. But I am not confined to a chair.

As I said in myfirst post the vehicle has to be modified in order for me to drive.

Any other input most welcome, if you have first hand knowledge but would like to remain annoynemous please PM.

Pete

Hi Pete

Does the person genuinely have to use a wheelchair (not just occasionally)

That leaflet is quite clear about the qualifications required.

Pete,

"For the purposes of this relief a wheelchair user is anyone who has to use a wheelchair (electrically powered or otherwise) in order to be mobile",

"A person who only occasionally uses a wheelchair such as:
when visiting a shopping centre or gardens; or
temporarily because he has a broken leg
is not considered to normally use a wheelchair and is not eligible for the relief."

You are clearly in the former category so eligible for this relief on these grounds.

That's condition 1 of 4. You then need to meet the other conditions listed 2-4 and you're there. Condition 2 might entail ramps or arguably even as little as dedicated wheelchair storage. Condition 3 is the vehicle is for your use (sounds easy!). Condition 4 requires documentation - get a letter from your GP.

Anything else unclear?

Dave
