The MOT Station have not mentioned or suggested the Cause.
Enza Have quoted me £189+VAT Fitted for Disc & Pads
The MOT Station £245+VAT
If The MOT STation don't do the work, they want a re-test Fee of £30!

The MOT system has always been a nice earner and was the prime reason Garage trade associations pressed the UK Government not to go the the French and German 4-2-2 year testing regime. The Government announced yesterday that they have listened to them and in the name of safety will retain the 3-1-1 year regime.
They have acknowledged that much tighter controls need to be placed on the garages to ensure they are not using the test to generate work that is not required.
If your skills (and tool kit ) are up to it, I'd by the discs and pads and do it myself, it, fairly straight forward, there'll be a video on Youtube, almost any will do to get the general idea.
As for the £30, you'd probably save that by going to your regular garage, but obviously check first.
IF you fancy DIY then safety first, and don't dangle the callipers from the hose, support them by some wire or put on a box etc

As I drove out of the garage, that came on the news. I am all for keeping the 3 1-1. It is the £30 re-test fee I am a bit miffed about after paying £58.50 for the original 30 mins work.
But even at the 3-1-1. 37,000 miles is not a lot and this problem could happen within 3 years from new.

That's why for the last five years I've used the local City Council MOT test centre - they don't do repairs to privately owned vehicles, only the Council's.
I have no problem with a very thorough test - indeed, that's what I want - and they are thorough! But for too many years I've felt uncomfortable entrusting the MOT to a commercial venture that has an obvious vested interest.
I should add, I'm not suggesting all (or any) garages are dodgy - just I prefer the peace of mind of an impartial independent test.
I usually have the vehicles serviced at an approved garage (Citroen or Fiat in my case) shortly before the MOT. Then if there were a problem when it came to the test, I'd return to the servicing dealer. Fortunately, that hasn't happened to date.
I am firmly in the ''use a garage you can trust''camp.I want a thorough MOT doing for safety reasons as I am sure we all do,but I don't want to shell out for unnecessary work.
My local garage doesn't do a cheap MOT but will not look for unnecessary and profitable work.Their rates are reasonable so if any work needs doing I let them do it so the re test fee doesn't apply.

This is the first time I have left an MOT renewal so late.
ENZA now could not do it until next week. I was going to Get them to do the whole job and a new MOT.
I gave the go ahead for the original MOT'ers to do the work and retest (no fee). But that costs more than the above. But as I said, van needs to be back on the road.
The company I have used for the MOT wil get no further work from me. They have been a pain in the 4rse. Every time I call I get something along the lines of......
"its not my job"
"I don't do pricing"
"the person you need to speak to is on the phone"
"the person you need to speak to is not in"
"I don't know I have been out"
Only once have they returned one of my phone calls, with a price. That price has changed 3 times.
I have recommended the company on here numerous times. As soon as I have got the work done, I will respond to these posts and suggest people steer clear of them.
When getting your car serviced we all expect the oil and filter to be changed, maybe an air filter but other than that there is very little to do under modern vehicles, very few require valves adjusting, no points to set, no timing to check..........spark plugs seem to last forever. One BIG item that in my opinion is always missed is the brakes. Reason being is that they seem to work OK so what's the problem.......? They get gummed up in brake dust and all the other 'crud' and 'mud' and of course road salt.
Brakes really should be stripped, cleaned and lubed once a year.
I used to do it myself but have not had the facilities this past couple of years so I point out that I want it doing at time of service.
Of course, if your vehicle is quite new and you use the main dealer you'll probably find they do service the brakes as per the schedule and included within your 650 pound bill.
Other than that it seems more often these days that the brakes are just left and have to be changed when in truth there is a lot of use left in them.
I always have a quick look if I need a tyre doing while the wheel is off, a quick look can reveal a lot, state of disc, thickness of pads, even if you only see one side if it's well worn chances are the other side is the same.
Brakes and tyres are the most important safety items on any vehicle and as jonandjules says usually ignored until MOT time or you hit something HARD.
I've always made it a practice to brake a little harder than needed sometimes (when nothing behind) just to check they do the job, I check brake lights to by looking in shop windows when waiting at lights etc or seeing the reflections elsewhere, same with front lights, no need to get out just look at the reflections on the rear of the vehicle in front.
Safety is our own responsibility, if you keep your eyes open, you won't need to have the MOT wallah to tell you when something is wrong, you'll have already fixed it.
Too many people wait for the MOT to find out if everything is OK, it doesn't occur to most people that it's only a snapshot of the state of roadworthiness at the time of the MOT, a week later it might fail.
Same when buying used motors, it's got 2 months MOT Gov, only means it might be 10 months since anyone looked at it.
