Hi folks,
I recently changed my Motorhome to an Adria Compact and was considering fitting a wind-out awning.
Before deciding I thought I would ask a few questions:-

If you have one do you use it regularly?
Are they really worth the money (probably about £1,000 fitted)?
Comments and experiences very welcome.
Many thanks

Jamsieboy

Not sure if they are worth the money but they are very useful, especially if you are thinking of touring in southern Europe during the summer.

When you consider that I bought a patio awning for the house for less then £200 and it is far more durable than a Fiamma/Omnistor offering it does make you think.

We use ours all the time and would not like to be without the choice.

Hi Jamsieboy

No and No are my answers ...

We don't use ours "regularly" and yes they are expensive for the amount of use we give ours BUT ( as you can see it is a big but) I would not be without it Rolling Eyes especially when it is raining Laughing .

and if you get one do not ever say to a campsite reception that you will be using an awning as they will most likely add on a charge ....it is a wind out sunshade. Wink Wink

To provide some balance, yes & yes. Whether somewhere to sit in the shade in summer, or shelter from the rain when barbecuing (BBQ not under canopy, obviously) in winter.

We use ours a fair amount. We only holiday in UK for the time being, and as we like to barbie alot, it comes into it's own for that reason alone. If it's raining we can still bbq in comfort. For us, I would say that it was worth the money yes.

Use it all the time, woulfn't be without t and the bigger the better! Awning tie dwns are a good idea if there s a BT f wind about and only takes 5 minutes to bang a couple of staes in the ground

Hi

Another tip to get the most out of a wind out awning is , if you can find a place to mount them, fit the small brackets that allow the awning legs to be attached to the side of the van. We have always used our awning as a porch when it is wet and these little brackets ( that should come with the awning) make for a quick and easy way to have the awning wound out as soon as you arrive on site... and at night you can wind the awning nearly back in and leave the legs attached to the side of the van Wink

Hi Jamsieboy,

Another Yes vote from me for the reasons mentioned above.

I think you may be over estimating the price a bit as well. I have just fitted an F45 TiL 4.5m (brand new) that cost me under £500 (OK I fitted it myself, but I don't think fitting will that excessive, try the likes of RhinoIstalls on here).

Also, do a bit of shopping around, and you may find the very recently superseded models (replaced by the F45S) for a good price.

Good Luck

Got one on my motorhome, but not used it yet.

However we did use a similar sunshade - put up when you stopped, not wind out, on our 6 week caravan tour of france last year.

best bit of kit ever ( cost £100) used t every day and took no more than 5 mins to put up.

Used it for sunshade and for rain protection - ideal and quick to put up so we used it!

More than we would have done with a full awing

When we bought our motorhome, because of our experience with this sunshade, we negotiated a fiamia wind out awning/sunshade.

We have a 3.5 metre Fiamma Awning [MHF Link] which we fitted only after establishing a NEED. After 6 weeks in France, in 2009, trying to find shade from the sun, AuntieSandra and I decided that the next expenditure on Our Coral would be on a wind-out canopy.

We got ours mail order from JohnsCross MH in 2010. We also bought a tie-down kit and a 'Magic Rafter', total £560, less discounts.

Since fitting it, it has been used for up to 9 days at a time without concern. It is easy to wind out, easy to peg down using the tie straps, and the Magic Rafter gives the whole assembly much more rigidity. Our previous Fiamma canopy used to be wound in at the first hint of wind! Not this one! Wink

In the last year, we have also bought 3 pieces of the wind-blocker fabric from Lillypad Leisure. These curtains allow inmates to see out, but stop the wind from blowing in. Very comfortable! Wink Very Happy
