To the lucky people who can escape our winters for a couple of months in the sun, can I ask how you leave the central heating at home.

On/off. System drained or whatever?

Are there stipulations from Insurance Companies?

Anyone do it remotely?

Any advice welcome.

You do need to check with the home insurance, there are some policies that restrict how long you can be away for.

My folks disappear for the max period their insurance allows, but I go round and regularly anyway and do the post etc.

They set up a couple of electric heaters on a frost protection setting then every thing else is turned off.

Depends how your system is controlled. I leave mine on 24/7 stat turned down to 10deg C, radiator stats on low settings, it's just to keep the place ticking over and damp at bay. Big factor depends on how well insulated your property is. I always service my boiler prior to any long trips.

We left last January in the 'big freeze' for 6 months. Left the heating on 24/7 with rads down to frost setting - so the water was moving round the pipes to stop freezing.

Once the freezing period was over my son programmed it to being on briefly 3 times in the 24hrs.

We didn't have any frozen pipes.

We reckoned whatever the expense, it would be less than dealing with floods.

Our house insurance specified 16 deg in winter. This seems very warm but in practice while we were away for 6 weeks last winter it used very little gas.
The advantage of the policy (caravan club) was that it allowed a long period away.

Last autumn I had to change a faulty CH timer switch and a friend recommended a Honeywell CM927 Wireless Programmable Thermostat to replace the timer switch.

I haven't had too long to fully appreciate its benefits but so far I think it is saving on fuel costs. I also added a hot water cylinder thermostat so that fuel is not wasted trying to heat the domestic hot water higher than necessary.

One of the features is that the CM927 can be left switched off but if the room temperature drops very low it will automatically switch on to maintain a minimum temperature. The lowest temperature that can be set is 5 degrees but it may be set higher if you prefer.

Last year I left home in early March and a short time later the weather got very cold and there was a lot of snow so I had to get my brother to call to my house to turn on the heating to avoid any problems. He wouldn't have been needed if I'd had the CM927and it would have given me more peace of mind and saved fuel.
