Do try Delfin Designs, nr Spetisbury, Dorset - I know that they have replaced a 2.5 with a 2.8 into other vehicles. What they don't know about these engines .................
They will certainly be able to advise on your dilemma.
Thanks Sundial, unfortunately it looks like they went out of business last October. After googling them I found the MHF directory, so got some good numbers off that for advice. C&M autos were helpful....let's see. This engine seems to be very difficult to get hold of a replacement unit.
O.E. Quality exchange remanufactured engines for car, light commercial and heavy commercial vehicles. All engines after total remanufacture are dynamometer tested to ensure they conform to O.E. standards of power, smoke emission and performance. This emphasis on total quality enables us to offer an unlimited mileage /12 month warranty for all manufacturers products supplied by Prestige.
No surcharge will be raised at the time of supply. However, if the old unit is returned with a holed cylinder block, incomplete or is not returned within 28 days, then a surcharge will be raised.

That sound awful like a cam belt broke ---I always ask for the cam belt to be changed when we buy another M/Home as we have had one go and its no fun.
Good luck anyway and hope your soon back on the road.

Thanks for the comments...
Engine looked clean and dry before I left. It's a fiat Ducato, about 75k miles.
The guy is a priest who sold it to me, he lives in a beautiful part of Cornwall, so they just used it to park on beaches and clifftops etc around there. I can imagine with only doing short journeys like that, some problems might not manifest even if they are there...I'll talk to him when he gets back from his retreat though
In god we trust, the rest we pay cash!
Pray for a refund
Dragabed you are a star, I have nothing to add to this thread but just wanted to say what a nice person you must be to go to so much trouble for someone else
Thanks for restoring my faith in human nature.
Mandy
