Hi
I am in the market for a new camera as my digital is not repairable.
I used to have a camera shop before I retired three years ago so it's a bit of a bummer having to buy at retail. Although prices have come down.
I will probably go for a Canon Ixus 55, around £200 at Amazon.
Suggest you go for at least 4 mega pixels for picture clarity and I would also make sure it uses rechargeable batteries.
I will go for one that has an SD memory card which I can then use from my old camera, these can be taken into your local shop and have prints made. If they have one of those stand alone Kodak printers you can even do it yourself on the spot .
I would of course always go to the independent retailer who will invariably have more product knowledge.
Happy hunting

John

I am assuming that you haven't had a digital camera before. There are plenty of reasonable digital cameras at about £100 but if its your first digital camera then you need to be aware of some drawbacks at that sort of price. First of all the quality of a picture taken with a £100 digital camera will be much much less than a picture taken with a £100 35mm one. We have just completed a basic digital photography course and half way through went out an bought a second hand SLR digital camera to share. Our cameras were fairly new and one was in the £140 and the other £200 range, neither now satisfies us. We have Sony cameras but would not recommend them if you want to keep costs down as the memory cards are so much more expensive than standard types.

One feature that is worth having is the ability to pop in AA or AAA batteries a lot of the very small cameras have a rechargeable battery that is specific to that sort of camera, when it goes flat you are stuck. whereas in emergencies there are very few places that don't have AA batteries for sale and you can always keep some in your bag.

Even the cheapest cameras have the ability to modify the standard 'point and shoot'. Its cheaper to have them menu driven than provide a physical switch some menu procedures are really complicated and time consuming having a switch that says landscape or moonlight is soooo much quicker.

The last thing about cheap cameras is where have they saved the money? if its the lens then leave it. I also recommend going to a camera shop if you want to buy a camera and don't know too much about it. I use Jessops.

My digital camera is a Fuji fine Pix and uses XD card. These memory cards have come down in price since I bought the camera and you can buy quite large memory/storage fora reasonable price now.
I can use rechargable batteries plus AA batteries so is useful if they go flat on me when we are out. Having said that I useually have spare rechargeables with me...........But not always Sad
Get the highest pixel you can afford for better quality.

I bought mine from Jessop's, had a look around, asked what I should be looking for I terms of best quality at a budget price.
They advised on min 4 mega pixel, and optical zoom.
then we found one of last years model HP...£250 camera for £150.
