I have specialist insurance for my m/h and transferred my No Claims Discount to this policy . As I also drive a car, I'm now renewing my car insurance and find that because my NCD is now on my motorhome policy, the premium on my car insurance jumped from 200 to over 400 quid. I've been doing the phone around for the best quote, but they tell me that although I've been driving for 15 years with no claims, they can't give me NCD on my car policy because it's on my m/h policy. Is this right ? I'm amazed, because I can't possibly drive my m/h and the car at the same time, so the risk on both policies goes down, not up !! This is crazy. Anyone else had this problem ?
I'm also a bit frustrated on having to explain to spotty faced teenagers at insurance call centres what make and model my m/h is because they can't find it on their computer !! Whatever happened to properly qualified insurance brokers. Rant !! |

Hi Drifter,
I always thought it was the case, that you couldn't use your NCD on two different vehicles, but I’m insured through Safeguard who said if I proved my NCD they would apply the discount to the motorhome. I thought there might be a catch and expected them to just give me discount for the year, but they said that providing it was valid they would still apply the it.
I have a multi bike policy as well (Have had for years), suppose that works in the same way.

Some time ago I insured my camper in my name & the car in my wifes name. I already had a max. no claim bonus. Because we could prove my wife had been on my insurance for quite a number of years without any claims I think they gave us almost the max no claim discount for her. Currently we are both on the max. discount & shopping around the insurance can be cheaper for the car in the wifes name.
My insurance for my homebuilt camper is with the AA, I have tried every year to find a cheaper quote but so far have failed. The car is insured with Frizzel, the wife is a teacher & the insurance covers her if she has to kids in the car. They give good discounts for union members. |

| What Safeguard actually do is give you an introductory discount for the first year based on your ncd/track record on your car. After the first year the m-home policy earns ncd in its own right and builds up |

I made a point of asking Safeguard if it was just for the first year and they said they would apply it every year.
...................I course I won't know if someone's told me a 'porkie pie' till I come to renew.

You have discovered that the insurance industry is not there to serve you but to fleece as much money out of you as possible.
They don't seem to be so bad with motorhomes, you should try motor bike insurance.
One question that I have never found the answer to is if it takes five years to build up maximum no claims bonus why is it that if you do not have insurance for two years you have to start with none. |
