Has anyone had an 'A Frame' recently fitted by either Smart Tow or TowBars2TowCars (T2T) or maybe someone else who fits a similar 'Electronic' system and if so, what made you decide to use that particular Make?
No legalities please from those not in favour of A Frames.
I have the Tow bar 2 Tow Car system. I have had it exactly a year to the day. It is installed in an Abarth 500. I wanted a system that would not alter the vehicle appearance in anyway when not being towed. I contacted Graeme, the owner of Towbars 2 Towcars and was very impressed with his technical knowledge of all aspects of using and operating with an A Frame. The system was installed very professionally and the product has proven to be first class.
Customer back up and service is First Class and would highly recommend. I can monitor the car braking when I brake and can see via an LED in the motorhome when the brakes in the car are being applied and more importantly when they have come back off.
I suggest you contact Graeme and he wil give you all the information you may require without being pushy in any way.
It takes me 10 minutes to fit and have attached to the back of the car, it is very simple
I towed a number of Smart Cars on a trailer for almost 10 years. I wish I had gone down the A Frame route years ago.
If you need any independent advise information regarding towbars 2 Towcars drop me a pm
I have no connection with the company other than being a delighted customer
Location: Brimington, Chesterfield, Derbyshire and Acharavi, Greece
I have towed with armytages for a while but last year purchased the unibrake system, The difference is that with the unibrake you are not limited to small cars and you can tow up to 2000 kg (A-frame max) but dont forget that the towbar/ball can max out at 1800kg.
This system uses your original servo system, ie air or vacuum, an extremely light A-Frame (9.7 kg) and extremely easy to fit (4 min) it also has an emergency operating system inside your MH
The system can be used to reverse quite easily as some others can as well, It is totally undistinguishable when not in use.

Edited :- Forgot to add why I chose this one.
The reason is that I am not fond of small light cars which may be underpowered, I also like to transport my family when they join us on holiday hence I tow a Peuget 308 Hatchback which comfortably covers all the unexpected.
I originally asked Towbars2tow cars and they refused to fit thier system to a larger vehicle then I discovered unibrake, Problem solved.

I agree with the comments about the Tow bar 2 tow car system.
Having investigated all the systems I found that this system was the tidiest installation, the A frame the neatest and easy to lift and fit. More expensive than others but it shows in the engineering and ease of use.
Yes I have had a A Frame fitted to my Smart For Two and it was fitted by smart specialist in Guildford their understanding and care is of the highest standard, I had this one fitted as it gives me a choice of what car I tow it with for instance I dint want to pick it up with the MH so i towed it home behind my 4x4 and i didn't notice it on the back the proportional vacuum braking is excellent.
Smart tow give a superb service and even give you spare pins etc just in case you lose one.
Thanks all for your replies which are much appreciated.
I had already spoken with Graeme at T2T but just wanted to check what others had recently had fitted before committing. Still not sure to be honest as all 3 systems sound very efficient so I guess cost could be a consideration if anyone would like to PM me what they paid?
Anyone been through Germany recently as I heard on MHF last year that there was a problem using an A Frame there?
I honestly cannot remember what I paid, but think it was around £1700. I would suggest you see who are closest and most convenient. However, I would add that TB2TC have offered first class customer service well after parting with my cash.
You don't need to take both the car and van at the same time. I used mine for a few months without the monitoring LED in the motorhome without any issues and had the van mod done at Peterborough show when it wa convenient
We never take the car to Europe, find our little Vespa far more practical and gives us flexibility to use aires and Stellplatz without having to worry about what to do with the car.
Whatever system you go for I wish you many happy miles of motor homing with the A Frame
Just a word of appreciation about Armitages for anyone thinking of going to them.
To keep a long story short, I want to design and make my own A-Frame to tow the 2CV. They do exist, but for several reasons I don't really like any of them.
The crucial bit of the design, both for safety and convenience, is the towing eyes fitted to the car. These obviously need to be absolutely right, or I might find the 2CV overtaking me one day!
I just rang Armitages since their system looks reassuringly hefty, foolproof and simple, and they could not have been more helpful, even though they knew from the start that I wasn't about to spend much with them.
The eyes were pretty expensive at £18 each - but what price safety!!
