Please note that BGAN does work in the UK although there will not be coverage for the whole of the UK until the second satellite is operational which is due within the next Week or two.

I have included below the Hardware costs and a sample of some of the Airtime Tariffs that we have available, attached is some further information on the range of BGANS that we can provide..

BGAN is very straight forward it is a Satellite IP Modem which you would connect via UBS cable directly into the PC the antenna would need to be placed either by a window or outside ensuring that the antenna can seed the satellite OK if not external antennas will be available later on the Modem comes with a power adapter, battery, installation disk and UBS lead already.

BGAN Equipment Costs:

with the BGAN to enable voice you would need to purchase a handset which costs: £210 each

HUGHES 9201 user Terminal: £1,890 if you order 2 or more the cost will go down to £1,720 each.

Security – The switched voice service is based on the same standards and encryption as GSM mobile phones and so delivers the same level of security. The IP data service supports the use of IPSec VPNs end-to-end.

Frequency bands used – the user terminals operate at L band.

Resilience – the network is expected to deliver 99.9% or better availability. A key advantage is its independence of both the local terrestrial network and mains power – following major incident affecting both terrestrial services and mobile networks the BGAN network should still is operational. The satellite is accessed from resilient hubs (located in Holland and Italy).

Please note that we would ship the BGANS from the UK and have a dedicated 24 hour helpline, the BGANS can be installed straight out of the box, and coverage is Global although these are a terrestrial product.

Latency will be much the same as any other geostationary satellite system – i.e. about 650-700ms round trip for the distance plus 50-100ms or so for routers etc., so around 750-800ms. This is compatible with many transactional processing systems; problems arise if one end-user operation involves multiple transactions…
