I used to be quite a good photog a few years back. couple published in papers [right place at right time] and won a local club comp. totally by accident [it was a snapshot of my daughter which turned out to be very good technically apparently.
I started when i was in hospital with smashed up leg and read everything in the library. it wasn't as hard as I thought so I swapped my point and press for a better camera and got bits and pieces.
i was really surprised how easy it all was. [and really enjoyed making the camera tell lies]
gave up when I was robbed in late 80's. they took all my kit and i never had the heart to start again..

I have just been sold [I couldn't resist it] a complete set up, about 2k worth. olympus OM1 and 4 plus macro and telephoto lenses and loads of filters etc so i am reading up and starting off again.
I wondered if we had any other keen photogs in here that would be interested in chatting about it and helping me regain some of the knowledge..

Hi Roi

You will find there are many photographers on MHF. The motorhome and the camera seem to go hand in hand. Must be the locations we go to and the fun we and our families have.

Photography has been my profession for the past 25 years initially on local newspapers, then national. For the past ten years it has been portrait photography.

I remember the olympus om1 from my school days (circa 1976-7Cool. I always thought it was a well made, quality camera and it does not surprise me it is still going strong. It took the photography world by storm because it was so small compared to the other cameras we were using. Their zuiko lenses were also very good quality. In those days cameras were very simple to use. I always relate the march of camera technology to cars. Bit lateral I know but at that time I could extract an engine from a mk2 ford escort for example, repair it and put it back within a few hours. I could also look at a scene and know what aperature and shutter speed to set without needing the help of the camera. Today I look under the bonnet to service a car and quickly close it again. Equally I probably only understand 20% of the Canon Eos 5D I shoot with.

Any help you need just ask, what sorts of photography interest you?

Look at this, black and white is coming back big time. It has always been popular but suddenly more and more people are asking for it. This was taken by Jan of her daughter. Loads of pics of her daughter on the site but a simple change of medium and the pic jumps out at you and has a classical look. I also like the way she has made use of side lighting, probably from a window and possibly taken either early on in the day or late on.

Hi, welcome back. As your still using 35mm have a try of some velvia. It is transparency film stock but wow, all others can not compare. If your kit is incomplete there are some excellent deals to be had on e bay.
Just brief at the moment but her who must be obeyed is calling. From a fellow welshman, Graeme (Rhuddlan)

G'Day

Hope you got the gear cheap as film is on its way out for the mass market.
Nikon not making any more film cameras I have heard . Kodak and others stopping film making.

Why?........DIGITAL is the way to go.

In my Camera club (Alnwick) and I believe others, are noticing a reduction in slide entries. However digital projection no way matches(yet) the quality of a good slide projection. We have had an evening just lately with top quality (v expensive) digi projector and our Zeis slide projector. Quite a difference!!!

I still take slides of campervan trips but am printing again thanks to the Computer.

BTW there is a Photography section in this forum

Ken...........with Wanderwagon3

Its great isn't it Wanderwagon3, the debate between film and digital. In my opinion you are 100% wrong about digital not being as good as film in terms of quality. We have produced prints here 30"x24" taken on a canon 1DS mk 2 at 17million pixels and on Raw. They were then printed onto 260gram paper on an epson 7600.

We have been digital for five years. Prior to that we shot on all formats from 35mm to Sinar 5inch x 4inch. The quality from the digital surpassed the 5x4. BUT everything we have digital is profiled carefully. Until this is done you cannot optimise the quality available.

We are lucky because photography is a living so can get the cost of equipment back through the work we do on it. Recently though I did some prints for Olly's daughter which had been taken on a camera I think Olly said had cost a few hundred pounds and the quality was still better than 35mm.

The other side as you pointed out is the ease of printing compared to film. That said film is still very much in use and I am sure will be for some time.
