I started Bar-b-que'ng on the beach in the mid 70s. and I have tried an assortment of BBQs since. I have tried gas, it lies rotting in my shed. No amount of persuasion will convince me to us anything but charcoal.

Its cheap and readily available anywhere, you can supplement it with drift wood etc but you can run out of gas.

For that real BBQ flavour there is nothing better and whilst it may take a little longer to cook it gives you more drinking and social time!

I use a brick built one in the garden or a cast iron hibachi if there are just two of us. In the mortorhome I take either a cob or a suitcase one and all are fueled by charcoal.

My wife insisted on buying me one of those 'KETTLE'? jobs that happened to be on offer from Aldi last week.

Normally I used a small round one with 3 height settings, this allowed me to incinerate or not as the mood took me. Wink

However this new wopper BBQ needs approx 2 kilos of briquettes to get it anywhere near the food which sits high on the rim (non height ajustable).

I tried it out on Sunday, it took about 45 mins to cook sausages, burgers and try as I might I could not get it to burn the jackets on the potatoes. The streaky bacon never cooked either, actually it turned transluscent and remained raw. Embarassed

The circumfrance of the cooking grid is akin to a wagon wheel...but there's only the 2 of us. Shocked

Most of my Motorhome catering is conducted in pub kitchens or French cafes with a plat du jour of about 12Euros.

However i do like to feel self sufficient and i was much taken with Spykal's neat, tidy and small barbecue set up.I could drop off my second saucepan to make way for it.

To this end it being a sunny evening i borrowed a similar little gas stove from daughter 2 and using a small cast iron skillet enjoyed great success.

A cut of lightly oak smoked fresh salmon,Jersey Royals and Petits Pois.

Wine was a bottle of Black Sheep Riggwelter.Strong Yorkshire Ale.

Now where can i buy one of those little griddles that Spykal was using. Please,Please not Lakeland Plastics. That web site strikes fear into an old man's heart.I look after myself without the aid of anything they sell.

Hi Moondog

My van is not the biggest so the little cooker and the folding cast iron pan are great...they pack away so easy...Ok its not "proper" BBQ but I would put a steak off my little griddle up against any off a gas BBQ. (Competions can be arranged... challenger to provide the meat ..I'll do the wine Laughing )

The little cooker you can get almost anywhere for around £10-£15...it does a nice line in bacon and eggs too ..outdoors in the morning.

The pan is heavy cast iron is 12.5 inches long and has a folding handle, it is called a Typhoon Cast Iron Chargriller HP32W ... I bought it at our local factory outlet cookshop for around £13......so I have been on a web search for you and have found them here for £15..not cheap but it will see me out Laughing and it does a loverly bit of steak.

If pitched too close to one. A gas mask. If they a really clever, you know the ones, sending smoke signals into the next county we go out for the evening. Sorry can't stand the smell. I never complain as I seem to be the only one that does not like them.

If you mean the smell of that mixture of burning firelighter fluid and newspaper smouldering when an "amateur" BBQer is getting his/her "real" charcoal BBQ going and has thrown on a dozen burgers before the charcoal is ready .......

yes........... I agree, I don't like that smell either.

There have been times when I thought that it was going to be another job that guy Red Adare .
