Jim

The Maplins kit looks to be identical to the new Omnisat Mini kit but includes the 12/240v digibox for the bargain price of £79.99. Omnisat list it as an extra on their website:

Maplins have been selling these as fast as they get them in. We bought one out of sheer curiosity as it seemed too good to be true and are very impressed. Set up in minutes on our bedroom window ledge using the suction base, used the supplied compass which attaches to the dish itself and immediately got a superb picture. The receiver box and remote are exactly the same as the Omnisat. It also comes complete with a satellite finder which connects between the LNB and the receiver but the add-on compass was so good we did not use it. We used it in the van on Angelsey last weekend mounted on the dash board shelf and again got a fantastic picture. Digital radio reception is first class too.

By aligning the compass to the other satellites using the compass finder we got excellent reception on five other satellites.

Its a bargain for the digibox alone which comes with a 240v adaptor. The dish is plastic and the range of clamps from suction base to outside wall mounts and g clamps is very comprehensive. You can even use the case to mount the dish. 1 year no quibble guarantee too.

If you register on to the Maplins web site you will even get money off vouchers which will reduce the price by £3.

Granted its not a gee wizz roof mounted dish and it may be fiddly to set up at times but for £76.99 (using the £3 voucher) its our bargain purchase of the year. All the cables, coax connectors and a scart lead are included.

For anyone just wanting a 12v/240v digibox to use with their own satellite dish it is well worth considering. It does not take Sky cards but you get Sky News, BBC News 24, BBC1,2,3,4 and all the ITV channels and loads of German,French, Italian,Spanish and other national channels. No channel 3 or 4.

Regards
Pat

Hi to both Jims

Thank you for price Jim, makes me feel even better now.

Looks very similar indeed so give Lidl a go and save a few bob. But, and this is just my experience with Lidl, if you have to take it back for whatever reason (unsuitable or faulty) they will not give you your money back until the item has been tested. This will mean at least two trips which will, depending on where your Lidl is, cost time and fuel. It took them three weeks to check an iron I returned and whilst I still use them for other items as they are a very good value store I would not purchase anything electrical from them again. This is in marked contrast to Aldi who will refund without question even on the last day of their 12 month money back period.

Regards
Pat

Greetings,

I have tried several times to get a satellite system from Lidl but unfortunately when I get to the place where they all supposed to be they have all gone, I have even queued in the morning but unfortunately I am unable to run or walk fast, people just fly past me to get them first.

I did eventually purchase a 12 volt minisat box off the internet from Maxview for about £50 inc, a dish for £16, and bought a tripod with 2 floodlights on from Makro for £11.75 inc. no need for the lights but the tripod is stronger than most of the others I have seen and its bright yellow so no chance of walking into it.

Got a sat finder of ebay for £7.99 inc, so for about £85 got a complete system which work very well.

The Lidl system, which looks similar, was excellent. The flimsy plastic dish surprisingly gave slightly better quality/strength than my Multimo.
