A few months back I was fortunate enough to be sitting on the veranda of a hilltop game lodge in Southern Africa where I ate the most delicious ploughman’s lunch ever – I know, an odd place to have a ploughman’s but there you go. Anyway, as an accompaniment to the dish were some scrumptious pickled onions but they were pickled in some form of curry-flavoured vinegar – very, very moorish. Not very hot curry just a good flavour and nice and sweet. The following week we actually located them in a local supermarket (and pigged out for the rest of the holiday).
They must be available here surely but I can’t find them anywhere.
Anyone ever come across them ?
Failing that, anyone got a recipe for the vinegar

The grass is not, in fact, always greener on the other side of the fence. Fences have nothing to do with it. The grass is greenest where it is watered. When crossing over fences, carry water with you and tend the grass wherever you may be.

Hi Tony
they sound lovely I must say, sorry cant help you out on those but can really recommend our local onions pickled in hops!!!!
We bought some at a local fete and can't get enough of them. They are from South Darenth, Nr.Dartford and we buy them in our local Waitrose 'when' they have a supply of them in. They are the only Pickled Onions I can eat and when we can't get them any others just don't hit the spot in the same way.
If you are interested I will try and get the details for you.
If by "some form of curry-flavoured vinegar " you mean that the onions were pickled in a "hot" vinegar that reminded you of a chilli curry then I know where to get them!..........
Tesco
Yes Tescos own brand "Pickled Onions in hot and spicy vinegar" they a very good and may be what you are searching for....even if they are not exactly right I am sure you will like them.
I love em in fact I am going to have to have some for lunch now that you have reminded me that I have some in the cupboard
Well I started off trying to track down curry flavoured pickled onions and end up this afternoon on a trip to Waitrose to seek out hop flavoured ones and to Tesco to look for the chilli variety
Before I go I suppose I'd better get changed - they have a dress code at our local Waitrose (well that's what it feels like).

Tony, hope you got your best bib & tucker on for your trip to Waitrose ours is a small branch in the village and not at all stuffy but I do know what you mean.
I don't think all branches stock the Darenth Valley onions - it seems to be a Kentish thing, so you will just have to dig out your passport, get your jabs up to date and have a trip across the border into Kentishland
We are not a bad lot over here you know, and welcome most foreigners ...even Essex boys.
Let me know how you get on, I must say the Tesco Fire eaters sound good as well. Dress down code in order for that trip though

While we're on the subject of things hot and spicey - have you tried these?
Very juicy with cheese or cold meats, lovely stuffed with cream/blue/goats cheese and even better strung on a barbequed kebab -
