Wonder why so many people are considering full timing

Householders could be charged according to the amount of rubbish collected from their homes under plans being considered by the Government.

Sir Michael Lyons, who is conducting an inquiry into the future of the controversial tax, told The Times he was looking at a range of user charges, including environmental taxes.

They would be paid on top of the council tax in order to make the cost of services more visible, the paper reported.

The plans could allow councils to charge residents for the amount of waste they produce, raising the prospect of bags of waste being weighed by collectors.

Other possibilities include charging less to greener households and those who separate their waste.

Sir Michael said: "I am clear that if people want more services, want to tackle difficult problems like congestion, environmental sustainability and water quality... you can't just tackle those problems and say you don't want to pay more tax."

Sir Michael went on to say he was studying European countries which already operate charges for waste, ranging between 25p and 50p a kilo.

His comments come as local authorities are trying to hit ambitious Government targets for recycling household waste.

A spokesman for the Department for Communities and Local Government said: "Sir Michael will be giving his final report to ministers at the end of the year and ministers will consider all his proposals."

Hi

When I moved to Barnsley in 1997, the property I bought had been empty for some time. During that period, dustbins had been phasedout and wheelie bins brought in. I did not have a wheelie bin and despite numerous letters and telephone calls to the council, the bin was not forthcoming!

After a month of bin sharing with my neighbours, I filled my car with bin liners full of trash and dumped them at the council offices.

Strangely enough, that very afternoon, TWO wheelie bins appeared!

I work just down the road from the tip... i'll take my own rubbish when I go to work if it reduces my extremely high council tax!

BTW... how many (dishonest) people would be loading up their neighbours bins when no one is looking... Laughing

Shall we all write to Sir Micheal and say we don't mind paying per kilo as long as we pay the same overall rates as other european contries. Spain for example is approx Ģ100 per year - oh and the bin men work at night so as not to block up the roads (probably because its cooler then as well).

If his real aim is to improve the way we get rid of our rubbish he will lose a fortune in taxes and rates

We started with one bin and now have three, a black a brown and a blue one.

Waste has to be sorted into the right bins, if you put the wronf stuff in they don't empty it. Do I get a rebate? Do I buggery.

The frequency/order of the pickup is all wrong meaning we have to drive up to the tip to drop off bags between pickups.

That aside it is a valid query/problem, do we really need to produce so much waste. The amount of packaging is ridiculous for some products.

Just the subject to set me off on a rant Twisted Evil

Sevenoaks District Council who we pay an extortionate amount of Council tax to wont introduce wheelie bins on the grounds of expense...new vehicles to deal with bins and cost of bins. All surrounding areas like Dartford have wheelie bins - just not us.

We have black plastic bags for normal waste, clear plastic bags for paper and (ironically plastic waste) Rolling Eyes and brown paper sacks for garden waste. This involves 3 different types of vehicles and men to collect (on same day) although garden waste is every fortnight not every week!!

We have to pay for the garden waste sacks anyway and if we should be naughty enough to run our of the Council supplied plastic sacks we have to buy extra of those as well. They will not collect anything not in a Council sack.

Recently we noticed that both sets of rubbish were being hoiked into the same van Evil or Very Mad how could this be. We were religiously separating the waste into the sacks as demanded by the Council and it was all being churned up in the same lorry. Time to blow a fuse.

Hubby wrote an e-mail to Council enquiring about this practice and received a reply full of so much cr*p it deserved its very own bin bag. Tried to tell us that the waste was still sorted out once back at the depot. Now we have seen the machine macerating the rubbish once it hits the back of those wagons so they must think we are total idiots to swallow that load of bunk but what can you do? Lorry's and staff on duty each week now down to 1 for the plastic sacks and 1 every other week for garden waste..result massive saving to Council but no reduction in our tax. Makes me want to spit...but then I'd be fined for that.

See I told you it would make me rant Embarassed

Off now to kick a few bins.

Hi

We noticed years ago in the USA, in California I think, that people were walking the side of the highways picking up empty drink cans....the reason turned out to be that the manufacturers or supermarkets had to pay back a cent or two for each returned can. Now that's the sort of thinking that we need here ....not new taxes.

How about insisting that all the packaging that comes with any processed foodstuffs should be taken back by Tescos or whoever sold it to you? So when you go shopping you take a bag of rubbish back to the shop where you got it from ? Get them to dispose of it. I bet the packaging would soon become minimal Laughing

What is needed is a big carrot not a big stick ..a reward not a tax....so they should be paying out a bonus to familys who recycle or compost the rubbish.... This govt seem to think that tax, tax, tax and new laws are the answer to everything....what a load of .......................rubbish.

rant over Laughing

mike

Well I think your all being terribly nasty about that nice Sir Michael Lyons, after all, he is trying very hard to justify his outrageous salary, unbelievable pension, car, staff & that nice second home he bought after the investiture.
I bet he worked as a dustman, just to have the experiance of people shouting at him & to see how bloody stupid his ideas really are.
HE can afford his rates! Why can't you! Crying or Very sad
