We are just about to take the plunge and take our van abroad but I wonder if anyone can help us with the rules governing walking.

Are paths and farm tracks shown on French Carte De Randonnee open for the public to walk down.

How can I tell which paths are open to the public on a French Carte Topographique map?

Any help appreciated. Thanks

hi Munci
We live in France Lot region Cahors, every dept seems to have different rules, and the maps are not really much help.
We know our area really well and we walk everywhere, as long as you keep to the verge area and not mulch the crops you are safe, keep any dogs on the leads especially hunt season, too varies a lot.
Just do not walk up someones house or farm drive, they get very annoyed, if you get lost and you need to ask directions in a rural area stop at driveway and hoot a few times, someone will come.
Best idea is to pick your town/city and visit Tourist info, they are really helpful and will give you handsful of local walking maps, also advice where to explore if you like specialist topics, like wildflower or hill top walks.

Send me post if you need any info on our area.
Patrick
