Hi Dave, I think that the next big con will be Pay As You Go insurance. Dig deep and you find out that Norwich Union and Direct Line both control companies that own the two biggest selling GPS tracking and location devices in the UK. I was told that Norwich Union have tried to register the term Pay As you Drive (or something similar) Italy is already in the grip with of this as the following quote from Meta Systems Italia web site

The substantial nationwide advertising campaign, featured in the country's leading popular press, aims to make the general public more aware of telematic security systems offering access to the pay-per-use type of insurance cover which is currently being launched on the market.

Imagine the insurance claim! I was driving at 30 miles an hour " No you weren't you were driving at 50 MPH" Well yes but it was a country lane "No it wasn't! it was outside a school" Well yes but it was late at night when the school was closed! "No it wasn't it was 08:15!
I am being flippant but you can see the Big Brother aspect top this. The insurers will explain that it is for all our benefits, just like we all pay insurance except the scumbags that don't (and before we start to feel smug and good as a group, you would be amazed how many of our customers turn up on the campsite, slide the tax out of their camper windscreen pouch and put it on the windscreen of their tow car!)
I have just paid 70 euros for a Go Box to get across Austria and back only decide that as the weather was so bad in Italy to go to France, Tracking and location/congestion charging/number plate recognition the net is closing but I do wonder so times just how close to Orwell are we going to get? Will it end up with Nuke putting us in "Room 101" instead of jail? |

Don't know if this adds anything useful to the debate, but after researching trackers for my own RV, I was left rather dubious about their cost/benefit advantages.
I eventually tracked down (sorry about that) a British company that sells a rather neat solution. It's not an all singing and dancing GPS-enabled tracker, but it does act as an alarm if your MH is moved or tampered with and will send an immediate text message to your mobile phone. Once this has been sent, you then have the option to call the unit back, whereupon it silently switches on a microphone, so you can listen to what's going on in the MH. If the alarm is genuine, you can then call the cops. If the MH has been moved, the unit can be tracked via the mobile phone network, using a web site such as FollowUs (www.followus.co.uk).
As I said, this isn't a total solution, but for £199 + VAT it's pretty good value and as far as I know, isn't open to the disabling technique mentioned in an earlier post.
The company selling the unit are AlarmTrail. Their web site is
