Re-opened this old thread, as I've started to have similar problems with my GO 910 (bought Nov 2006). It won't charge on either the car or desktop mounts, unless it's pressed down into the mount - not by much pressure, but nevertheless, some.
In the process of diagnosing, I no longer can get any response from the dreaded Reset button (it won't click in & out now).
Strange that you reopened this thread. I read of Stew's problems ... "just like last year" I thought. "I'll tell him what we did in France", I also thought. Only to read that I already had.
The windscreen mount has been redesigned (and is so much better), and can be upgraded free by registering at TomTom somewhere. There was a thread ages ago about it.
The reset button may be stuck in - give it a sharp prod with the pointy bit of a pin, and try putting the pointy end in, and then wiggling it around a bit.
Sorry to be technical
Gerald

Hi Guys
I know it's an old thread, but any suggestions on what setting is best when travelling with the MH with TT, (don't want to be sent of down any small roads)
My old system ( software based on a PDA) had a lorry setting but this New Tom Tom XL (lovely big screen ) does not have anything like this
Any Ideas
Glenn

As far as I know, there is no setting on the TomTom to achieve this.
The last time I heard (which was several months ago now), the mapping company was including size of roads and height of bridges, etc, on their mapping data, but the satnav companies weren't doing anything with it.

We have downloaded the low bridge POIs and stick to the "fastest route" setting which tends to avoid smaller roads, but still have to watch out in case TomTom goes into skitz mode and tries to take us down 1 lane tracks now and then
Rule of thumb... If I don't like the look of a road then I don't go down it Same goes for some of Glenn's shortcuts over the years when he gets the maps out Funny thing is both of them get stressed when ignored
Glenn gives up trying to turn me around far sooner than the TT though

The short answer is charge it with the mains every month as the 12v charger isn't man enough for the job. The longer explanation is below.
We got fed up with our 710 locking up for no reason and after seven months decided to get our money back from the dealer (they had already
replaced one unit as faulty). So we took it back in its locked up
state as politly asked for our money back. The dealer's customer
service laddie (aged 12?) reset it; put in on a mains hook and low
and behold it worked perfectly. And refused to give our money back.
We explained the problem again - a bit more loudly - that it just
locks up and therefore it is unreliable. Then the laddie asked us it
we put it on the mains charger often. Not for three months, we said,
as we have been touring Spain and Portugal. There's your answer,
then, TomTom recommend frequent charging on the mains as the 12v
charger isn't man enough for the job. We pointed out that it didn't
say that in our manual (it doesn't even tell one how to reset it),
and we don't have access to the mains when we are touring.
Then we got louder and demanded the manager - when she arrived (aged 18?) and explained that the device was working OK and they wouldn't refund a seven month old item, we got very loud and pointed out the the device is designed to navigate one's vehicle around Europe, and if it cannot do that then it is unfit for the purpose it was sold for, and if the
dealer knew that when we bought it, they should have told us as we
had described our motorhome and how we proposed to use it. And anyway we had bought a replacement in Spain to avoid the driver divorcing the navigator; and we didn't have any use for two GPS units, and could we have our money back, please?
To cut the long story short - we got our money back.
