we were told that unless you drain the fresh water tank regularly and refill then the water will not be potable after a few days. I've tried the water from the tap in out new motorhome and can definitely taste the plasticisers or something. In any case we decided to do what we used to do when camping with trailer tents and caravans abroad and that is just buy cheap bottled water in 5 litre containers. In the uk we just refill these from standpipes as and when. They are also useful for topping up the tanks.
We got a food grade hosepipe which is 5m long and is neither use nor ornament. I got a cheap garden hose from wilkinsons and this is fine except watch out for the very cheapest since these tend to kink badly. Id definitely go for a 15-25m flat pipe if you've got the space since its surprising how tricky it is to get near a standpipe on a CL in the UK. Wouldnt worry about the hosepipe itself contaminating the water - just make sure you flush it through.
The best thing I've ever bought is a large plastic bucket - bendy with handles n- for 3.95. Can empty the waste tank easily in about 5 trips. UK campsites / CL's / CS's rarely have convenient waste points.
Forgot to say that having struggled with hoselock and threaded connections many times the best thing is a really solid rubber sleave to push over the standpipe tap - the sort of thing that you get with aquarolls. I just took off the one that came with the aforementioned useless 5m food grade hose
together with a matching waste water taxi and we're very pleased. We have a food grade hose reel as well, but find that often it's easier to park up and go and get some water later. Also, it takes me quite a while to get the lie-flat hose back on its reel, it always seems to retain some water so that I end up unwinding it and reeling it in again before it will fit!
We use an aqua roll and a 12volt submersable pump to fill our tank if on a site and not wanting to move, we also have a roll flat hosepipe with various connectors.
We have found over the past few years of motorhoming that there are more and more sites with motorhome facilities now for filling and emptying.
This is one of those subjects that has as many airings as views!
My take on it is as follows:
I didn't think it would make much difference what hosepipe was used so bought a green garden one. Flushed it through and the taste was blxxdy awful!
Changed to a white food grade hose and after flusing through, no taste whatsoever!
I think somewhere on this forum there is a note about what goes into the garden hoses and differences between them and the food grade ones. It makes for harrowing reading if you decide to go down the garden grade. However each of course to his own.
Sharon, Steve and Mark, 80 litre tank, that must fill very quickly, you want to try the 100 gallon one in my Winnie! It must take 45 - 60 minutes to fill at home, never needed nor tried on site yet!
We cheat a bit Unless we can get close to the campsite dedicated fresh water hose, we take the cushions off the bench seat, take off the lid to the water tank and fill with sufficient buckets of water to last us for a few days. This means carrying them for only short distances. I've always taken two buckets with us as one never seems to be enough and only takes a bit extra space. We don't use the shower and usually fill old bottles of water direct from the drinking water tap - we too find the plastic taste from the tank too much for drinking especially when it has been standing for a few days. However, I do use the tank water for cooking.
