Hi all

Reading some of the recent posting made me realise that no one has mentioned about driving a M/H after reaching the age of 70, are current purchasers aware that a medical / clearance by your own GP is required by law if they want to drive a vehicle over 3.5 ton and are 70 years of age or over.

Hi Ken

I was 70 on May 7th last and was well aware. This has been a topic regularly brought up on the MH-list and I did give it considerable thought when I was due to apply for my licence at 70.

Because of the post I held in the NHS before I retired I had quite a lot of experience driving a lorry and in fact held an HGV3 licence for many years.
When we were considering buying a new motorhome there was much heartsearching before purchase as I wanted to buy over 3.5 tonnes to give us extra payload.
My other half persuaded me that the mh we saw and eventually bought with 499kg payload was sufficient and would save the hassle of medicals.
In hindsight this was probably the right decision although I confess I wasn't sure at the time.

By the way, the fee of £10.00 isn't payable any more for the over 70's relicencing.
It finished on 28th Feb last (so I waited a couple of days before sending in my application and saved for once).

I got mine a couple of weeks ago although not due until July, but did not know about the £10.00 fee, also didn’t have to pay for the medical, all in all I didn’t do too badly.
