Well where to start, phoned around a few places to get "best advice". We were told to try washing out with a degreaser, thats fairy liquid to the non-technical amongst us, and then steam cleaning, then pressure wash. We tried all this before we managed to get through to C.A.K. Very nice technical bloke told us to cut up tank and use it as a flower pot!!!! Unfortunately because our tank has a cut out bit as it fits over the rear axle we will not be able to get one like this from C.A.K but will have to go for best fit, thereby having to resite pump, pipies etc. All this and we hardly even know how to work half the stuff on our motorhome. To get the exact one from CI (we have a CI elegant 330 ) will cost in the region of £400 so question is "best fit" or exact match £400 versus £120(but with more hassle). Both would take just as long to get here. Any advice!!!!!! Sad

The difference between £400 an £120 is £280

If you can live with the probable reduction in capacity then that £280 will probably pay for someone else to instal the new tank = reduction in hassle.

yep you are right we are now phoning around the few places in scotland that do service and repair to find out if they could fit tank. we are also on the recommendation of technical dude at c.a.k fitting a new cap on water inlet with a different key to open it and also a wee blue sticker which tech dude will send us free gratis, thus avoiding this mistake in the future. although after this episode I'm hopeful that we will have learned our lesson. Embarassed

Some time again I posted information on a product specifically designed for cleaning diesel out of potable water tanks. After a search I found one of my previous posts which should help you;

A German company named "Dr. Keddo" produce’s chemicals for camping and yachting purposes has a product called "Diesolan" which is exactly meant for cleaning a diesel-polluted fresh water tank. Look here and click on your favourite flag Wink

This is just a long shot (as they say in the movies), maybe worth trying to claim against an insurance policy as accidental damage.

tried the dr keddo route but no reply to e-mail, similarily tried another company in us with biodegradeable diesel remover but they don't ship to uk. thank you for the other tank manufacturers will give them a try now and see what happens. the problem seems to be that the tank has a cut out so it will fit over the rear axle so it is much more difficult to find something to suit.

I have spoken with the chemical company whom I deal with at work and their suggestion was to soak with a hot caustic solution overnight and then rinse with lots of fresh water.
Great care is needed when handling caustic soda, it burns skin and could cause blindness if splashed in eyes. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection to be safe.
Fill tank with hot water then carefully add the caustic crystals, mix around using a wooden spoon or stick and leave to soak..

It's worth a try ..caustic soda is available from most DIY stores and is relatively inexpensive.
If you try please let us know the results.

update on dr keddo just received an e-mail its 120 euros for 10litres and 70euros for 5litres thats £80 ish and £46 ish plus p&p. will possibly give this a try if the caustic soda doesn't work.
