I think you'll find it worse at Southport when the tide is in (cos it washes up everything that's been dropped on the beach while the tide was out and it ain't a pretty site)
If you do go to Southport you'll have a nice day out. Have a go on the Traumatizer and go for a walk around the model village or a trip out onto the boating lake (come in number thirty three your time is up!) or a ride on the coastal railway or a walk around the shops. Plenty to do.
Don't know what it's like to camp there though

There is a Caravan Club site at Southport which is brilliantly positioned and handy for the P+R, but probably doesn't take tents.
Have just come back from a night at Royal Umpire [all of a mile from where we used to live] at Croston about 14 miles from Southport, 10 from Preston and handy for excellent Indian restaurant, Indian take away and Chinese takeaway and Italian restaurant. More supermarkets than you'll know what to do with and 2003 Offlicence of the year at Gilsons
The site seems quite good, under new ownership since March hard standing plus grass pitches, showers look good altho didn't use them reasonable looking play area and dog walk, again didn't try any!
Barrier access - locked at 23.00, 2 pubs/ eating places within 100 yards plus garden centre. [£10.50 camper 2 adults hook-up - showers free but need token for hair drier]
Croston has train service into Liverpool.
Ignore the nasty comments on Southport!! lots of Euro money spent on prom and new bridge and pier. P+R easy to get to [£1.00 per vehicle] and if you need new shoes Lord Street is the place to try!
Don't forget binoculars to twitch at the birds on the marshes.
can't really comment on campsites cs never needed to use them, but if you want anything else I'll do my best to help.
ps have heard that these are ok but never tried them
willow bank, abbey farm [www.abbeyfarmcaravanpark.co.uk ]
and the people who have taken over Umpire also have Riverside on A565 into Southport.

hehe... sorry
Must admit that I ain't been to Southport for a couple of years or more although I still stand by my comment of "better when the tide is out" mainly cos it's great to walk along the vast expanse of beach there.
Oh.... and don't forget your knotted hankey to keep the sun of your head
